Map Mania Symposium
New Mexico History Museum

On Friday June 24 and Saturday June 25, the Chávez History Library hosts "Map Mania Symposium," a free event for all who love maps. The symposium opens with a reception and keynote speech on June 24, followed by a day of discussions on the 25th.

Explore historic maps and how they changed the world at these drop-in events.



  • Saturday, June 25, speakers:

  • 9:30–10:30 am: New Mexico State Historian Rick Hendricks, “Connecting the Dots: Maps and Land Grants”

  • 10:45–11:45 am: Judy Reinhartz, “How Wide the World: What Maps Can Teach Us”

  • Noon–1 pm: Lunch on your own

  • 1–2 pm: Mike Houx and Tomas Jaehn, “Map Collecting: Tips of the Trade”*

  • 2:15–3:15 pm: Dennis Reinhartz  “History on Maps”

*Bring a favorite map to the “Map Collecting” session. Email Tomas.Jaehn@state.nm.us with map info for pre-seminar research. (This session is for information only and not appraisals.)

The event is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of New Mexico. The event is free and open to the public. Seating in the auditorium is limited. Bottled water only.
