Before the Spanish arrived in the American Southwest, obsidian was the sharpest material available for making stone tools for hunting, warfare, and ceremony. Each flow of this volcanic glass has a unique geothermal fingerprint, allowing archaeologists to trace social interaction, trade, and mobility in ancient times.
