In 1933 painters Charles Barrows, Eleanor Cowles, Anne Stockton, James S. Morris, Gina Knee Schnaufer, Paul Lantz, E. Boyd Van Cleave and Cady Wells banded together to exhibit their work throughout the country and at their own gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although they had different aesthetics and techniques, they shared a love of the Southwest. They called themselves the Rio Grande Painters and were active until 1935. Despite their short tenure as a group, they made a lasting impression during the Depression with their costumed parties at La Fonda and modernist-leaning exhibitions.
