John Gaw Meem: An Arts and Crafts Architect in New Mexico

New Mexico History Museum

Dr. Bellmore will speak on John Gaw Meem, New Mexico’s most prominent historic architect, who popularized the Spanish Pueblo Revival and Territorial regional architectural styles.

Meem was an Arts and Crafts architect, espousing many of the primary tenets of the Arts and Crafts Movement in England including a focus on historic preservation; regionalism; unity of design; small, practical houses; and progressive ideas about community and contribution.

Audra Bellmore is an Associate Professor/John Gaw Meem Curator in the Center for Southwest Research, University of New Mexico and an Instructor in the Museum Studies Program.

Dr. Bellmore’s doctoral dissertation at Loyola University Chicago focused on English Arts and Crafts houses. She is currently working the book John Gaw Meem: An Arts and Crafts Architect in New Mexico, of which her topic will include.
