"Looking Back; Reflecting on Collections”

New Mexico History Museum

Dr. Romero will discuss the New Mexico History Museum’s newest exhibition, Looking Back: Reflecting on Collections, scheduled to open to the public on March 8, 2020. This show focuses on the museum’s collecting history, from the earliest beginnings at the Palace of the Governors through the 21st century.

She and other museum curators and colleagues organized over three hundred objects and photos from the collections, some of which appear on exhibit for the first time. In addition to exploring various collections, Dr. Romero will also discuss some of the challenges in maintaining thousands of objects and what new questions arise from bringing in new pieces to the museum.

Alicia Romero is from Albuquerque, where she continues to reside.

She received her BA and MA degrees in History from UNM and her PhD in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She wrote her dissertation on the Barelas neighborhood near downtown Albuquerque. Though she primarily focuses on Nuevomexicano and Nuevomexicana history, she has a great interest in Mexican and Latin American history, labor history, popular culture, and oral history.
