Southwest Rising: Contemporary Art and the Legacy of Elaine Horwitch
Dr. Julie Sasse, Chief Curator at the Tucson Museum of Art

New Mexico Museum of Art

Art dealer Elaine Horwitch was a major force in contemporary art in the Southwest and was responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of artists in the region. Dr. Julie Sasse, curator of the exhibition Southwest Rising: Contemporary Art and the Legacy of Elaine Horwitch, will discuss the life and career of this iconic figure on September 25 at 4:30 in the St. Francis Auditorium.

Horwitch’s unorthodox methods, unabashed lifestyle, and distinctive fashion sense made her a popular personality among tourists, collectors, and celebrities. Fearless and spirited, she was known for her singular cowgirl appearance, wearing aviator glasses, cowboy hats and boots, denim prairie skirts, and concho belts. She also carried a mother-of-pearl inlaid pistol that she often brandished to the delight and horror of her patrons.

Sasse, Chief Curator at the Tucson Museum of Art, worked for Horwitch for 15 years and will share scholarly insights on the influence of the dealer and her galleries. Following the lecture, she will sign copies of the accompanying book, co-published by Cattle Track Arts & Preservation and the Tucson Museum of Art.

This free lecture is sponsored by the generosity of the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico.
