Third Thursday: John Formby: Environmental Factors that Influence Wood Form and Structure
New Mexico Museum of Art

Many of the artists in With the Grain source their materials themselves, from the local environment. In this presentation we will hear from Dr. John Formby about the environmental factors that can impact the local trees and how evidence of those factors can be found in some of the sculptures in the exhibition.

John Formby is a Forest Health Specialist with the USDA Forest Service in Albuquerque. He spent five years as the Forest Health Program Manager with the New Mexico Forestry Division before joining the USDA Forest Service. He received his B.S. in Urban and Community Forestry and Ph.D. in Entomology from Mississippi State University. He specializes in insect pests of trees and shrubs. His grandfather, Homer Formby, was a woodworker and specialized in the restoration of furniture.
