Selections from the Carol Warren Collection

Join us to celebrate the opening of a new exhibition in our Lloyd Kiva New Contemporary Exhibition hall! What’s New in New: Selections from the Carol Warren Collection features a broad and deep collection of art including pieces by Tony Abeyta, Pat Priutt, Tammy Garcia, among dozens of others. From 1 - 4pm, Bernice Naranjo (Taos Pueblo) - who is also represented in the exhibition - will demonstrate for visitors in the Buchsbaum Pottery Gallery.

Also offered is a special dance by the Dinetah Dancers at 1pm and a lecture regarding the Long Walk by Jennifer Denetdale (Navajo) at 1:30pm.

As this is the first Sunday of the month, admission is free for New Mexico residents! Also make sure to check out our new display of an early 20th century rug woven to commemorate the Long Walk.

This summer marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo between the United States and many Navajo leaders which will be commemorated at the Bosque Redondo Memorial in June.  This free event is hosted by the Navajo Nation, the Mescalero Apache Tribe and by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs parent agency of New Mexico Historic sites which includes the Bosque Redondo Memorial.

Our popular Pueblo Pottery series continues with the talented Hubert Candelario, who has been making pottery for the last 30 years. Made the traditional way, his early works were polished redward. Today he is famous for his precisely carved puzzle pots, swirl pots, and pots with circular or hexagonal holes.

Candelario has won numerous awards including first place at the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market. His work was also included in the 2002 exhibit and catalog Changing Hands: Art without Reservation at the American Craft Museum in New York City.

Don’t forget, Wednesdays are free admission for NM Seniors!

Los Luceros Historic Property: Cultura y Naturaleza (Culture and Nature) Series

From ancient pueblo settlements to Spanish colonial haciendas, Los Luceros Historic Property has provided a bountiful life for people through the centuries. This summer, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs’ Historic Sites division invites you and your family to enjoy the Los Luceros Historic property.

“New Mexican’s are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy on the banks of the Río Grande or under the shade of the historic apple orchard,’ said Patrick Moore, Director of New Mexico Historic Sites. “Activities and presentations held on these five summer Sundays will focus on nature and the culture of New Mexico and offer rare access to one of New Mexico’s most enchanting properties.”

Admission to the Cultura y Naturaleza (Culture and Nature) series of events at Los Luceros will be free. The events occur on the third Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Los Luceros in Alcade. Each date will focus on a different aspect of Los Luceros’ storied history and significance in New Mexico.

Jeff Kahm: Contemporary Painter

Friends of Indian Art Event

Rooted in indigenous abstraction and modernist aesthetics, Plains Cree artist Jeff Kahm represents a national and internationally recognized presence in the contemporary native art universe. Kahm is associate professor of studio art at the Institute of American Indian Arts. His work has been featured at U.S. Embassies in Colombia, Africa, Canada and the U.A.E.; exhibitions in Japan and Switzerland; and locally at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art. This is an exciting opportunity to hear from an emerging leader in the newest generation of native painters.

Starting in the Da Vinci, the Genius exhibition, we will examine how Da Vinci combined careful observation, scientific understanding, and artistic creativity to create works that are still relevant centuries later. Obsidian in the Ancient American Southwest

Archaeology 101 Series / with Sean Dolan

Before the Spanish arrived in the American Southwest, obsidian was the sharpest material available for making stone tools for hunting, warfare, and ceremony. Each flow of this volcanic glass has a unique geothermal fingerprint, allowing archaeologists to trace social interaction, trade, and mobility in ancient times. Lecture delivered by Sean Dolan, a LANL archaeologist and Oklahoma University graduate student.

Peruvian Printmakers Collaborate with Local Artists to Create Mural at Museum

This month, the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) welcomes a group of socially engaged artists from Lima Peru who will collaborate with local artists to create works that bridge North and South America. Carol Fernandez and Fernando Castro, founders of the screen printing collective Amapolay will be in Santa Fe from June 25 through July first. Amapolay will be collaborating with local print makers to create works around shared issues across international borders.
