As part of our weeklong Celebration of Printing, today the Palace Press, a working exhibition of our printed past and present, will work with Boy Scouts from around New Mexico in a hands-on workshop for a merit badge in the Graphic Arts. Besides printing, participants will tour the Print Shop, visit the museum and make old-fashioned printer’s hats. Sessions are at 10am-noon and 1:30-3:30pm. Our Storyteller is Mary Weahkee. She is a member of Santa Clara Pueblo and the Comanche Nation, with both Southwestern and Plains tribal affiliations. She currently works with the Office of Archaeological Studies and loves running educational outreach programs including storytelling and yucca-fiber production demonstration.

An Afternoon with Ben Franklin: Words and Music

A Celebration of Printing -- today’s events
As part of our weeklong celebration of Benjamin Franklin's birthday, Dr. Thomas Chávez, former director of the Palace of the Governors and a scholar of Spanish colonial history, speaks on his forthcoming book from the Palace Press, Dr. Franklin and Spain. Dr. Celia López-Chávez, a Latin American scholar at the University of New Mexico, speaks on the records about Franklin and his musical invention, the glass armonica, that are held in the Spanish Archives.
As a special treat, musician Mayling Garcia of Corrales will give a performance on the armonica, an instrument that creates music similar to what one achieves when swirling their finger around the lip of a crystal wineglass. Both Mozart and Beethoven wrote music for it, and it enjoyed wide popularity, although some performers complained that its tones caused emotional anguish. (Lead poisoning from the glass has been one hypothesis of an armonica-related ailment.) GranMary’s Place is a storytelling program is dedicated to and celebrating the memory of Docent, Mary Sudbrink. Mary loved life, loved children, and loved telling stories to children visiting the Museum.
All programs are at 2:00 pm and repeated again at 3:00 pm.
Our Storyteller is children’s book author and Storyteller Emmett “Shkeme” Garcia, is from the Pueblos of Tamaya (Santa Ana) and Walatowa (Jemez) in New Mexico. His diverse talents include Traditional Pueblo Singer and Dancer, lead singer of the award winning Native American Reggae Band Native Roots & Cultural Educator. In 2006 the University of New Mexico Press published Shkeme’s first children’s book “Coyote and the Sky” in and his second book, “Sister Rabbit’s Tricks” was released December 20, 2012. Currently, Shkeme is working on the 4th Native Roots CD.

Treasure of Silver Lake
As part of the special exhibit Tall Tales of the Wild West: The Stories of Karl May, the History Museum will show a German-made film based on a Karl May novel at 2 pm on Sunday, Feb. 10. Treasure of Silver Lake is a 1965 German production dubbed into English. In their first cinematic adventure, Apache chief Winnetou and mountain man Old Shatterhand (Lex Barker) pursue a gang of murderous outlaws who will stop at nothing to find the legendary treasure of Silver Lake. The event is free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents.

What’s New in New: Recent Acquisitionsis the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s annual exhibition of new acquisitions celebrating the gallery’s namesake, Lloyd Kiva New.

This exhibition highlights new additions to the MIAC/LAB collections from recent years. The focus is on modern and contemporary Native art including paintings, monotypes, pottery and sculpture ranging from 1968 to 2012. Approximately 35 works will be featured representing artists such as Samuel Manymules, Marla Allison, David Bradley, Ambrose Atencio, Ross Chaney and Fritz Scholder.

Alcove 12.9 Caps an Ambitious Series of Nine Shows
The New Mexico Museum of Art’s final show in the Alcove 12.0 series will open on March 1 with Alcove 12.9, featuring works by Jeff Deemie, Teri Greeves, Joanne Lefrak, James Marshall , and Mary Tsiongas. The exhibition runs through April 5, 2013.
In March of 2012, the Museum launched the Alcove 12.0 series—nine exhibitions focusing on new work by contemporary New Mexico artists curated by Merry Scully.

A Women’s HIstory Month Lecture
Twenty years after Gutenberg invented movable type, Catholic nuns were setting type in Florence—pioneers in the history of women and publishing. They were followed by the inspiring stories of Charlotte Guillard, Anne Franklin, and Virginia Woolf, as well as the dispiriting story of U.S. women barred from working in union print shops in the 1970s.
At 6 pm on Friday, March 22, Kathleen Walkup discusses the history of women printers in a free lecture, “Your Hands Will Always Be Covered with Ink: Nuns, Widows, Mavericks and Other Passionate Printers.” Sponsored by the Press at the Palace of the Governors and the Santa Fe Book Arts Group, the lecture is free in the History Museum Auditorium.

Turquoise, Water, Sky: The Stone and Its Meaning, opening April 13, 2014 at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, highlights the Museum’s extensive collection of Southwestern turquoise jewelry and presents all aspects of the stone, from geology, mining and history, to questions of authenticity and value.
People in the Southwest have used turquoise for jewelry and ceremonial purposes and traded valuable stones both within and outside the region for over a thousand years. Turquoise, Water, Sky presents hundreds of necklaces, bracelets, belts, rings, earrings, silver boxes and other objects illustrating how the stone was used and its deep significance to the people of the region. This comprehensive consideration of the stone runs through March 2016.

Byron Price, director of the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West at the University of Oklahoma and director of the University of Oklahoma Press speaks on “The Making of a Cowboy Hero" in the History Museum Auditorium. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Avenue at 10:15 am. Cost: $10; children 16 and under free when with an adult. Avanyu Trail Day: In honor of Earth Day. Walk our Avanyu Heritage Trail. Trail booklets available at the front desk for self-guided tours. Additional southwestern plants, traditional crops, water saving farming technique information will be available.
The Avanyu Heritage Trail is Museum Hill’s permanent outdoor exhibit about the Native people and the environment of the Southwest. Designed to acquaint visitors with some of the creative ways Native people adapted to and manipulated their environment, the quarter-mile long interpretive trail includes reconstructions of traditional gardens as well as examples of ancient architecture.

Music historians Mark Gardner and Rex Rideout perform and discuss the cowboy ballads collected by New Mexico cowboy, rancher, surveyor, and state cattle inspector N. Howard “Jack” Thorp, who published the very first book of cowboy songs at Estancia, NM, in 1908. Their performance, part of the museum's "Wild West Weekend," is at 6 pm on Friday, Aug. 9, in the History Museum Auditorium. Reception following in the Meem Community Room to celebrate the Palace Press’s new edition of Jack Thorp’s Songs of the Cowboys. Illustrator Ron Kil will be on hand to sign copies of this collector’s book, available for purchase. A free event, part of Cowboys Real and Imagined.

‘In The Light Of Justice: The Rise of Human Rights in Native America & the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples" Talk and Book signing with Walter Echo-Hawk. In the MIAC Theater, seating is limited, followed by book signing in the MIAC shop. Free.
This book examines the proposition that Native American rights are inalienable human rights. It urges Indian Country to stride toward the human rights framework created by the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples ("UNDRIP"). Relying on atonement and forgiveness traditions, it asks the United States to heal wounds of the past and create a more just society by implementing the UNDRIP.

Filmed at various locations in New Mexico and elsewhere, The Cowboys (1972) is considered one of John Wayne’s greatest movies. Based on the William Dale Jennings’ novel, the movie follows a cattle drive from Montana to South Dakota with real “boys,” after the real ones flee the range in search of gold. Free.

A Cowboys Real and Imagined event
New Mexico and the American West would know nothing of cowboys if it weren’t for the Spanish vaqueros who brought the first horses, sheep and cattle to the “new” world. Their equestrian techniques, clothing, boots, tools and tack can be seen today in canyons, plains, and backyard corrals. But will a ranching tradition that has survived land-grant swindles, droughts, storms, changing rules for leased lands, and global economic crises last another generation?
The New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors welcomes members of a deep-rooted family to discuss those topics and share the traditions that molded them in “From Vaqueros to Rancheros: Hispanic Heritage on the Range.” Part of the exhibit Cowboys Real and Imagined, the event honors Hispanic Heritage Month. Abiquiu rancher Virgil Trujillo and his father, Floyd Trujillo, will share stories, some of them by song, at 2 pm on Sunday, Sept. 22, in the History Museum Auditorium. The event is free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents. (Every day is free to children 16 and under.)

8th Annual Palace Gem & Mineral Show

Formed as water flows around rocks in sunny, desert lands, turquoise has come to symbolize both water and sky. From Cerrillos to China to the Middle East, the people who found it, mined it, polished it and wore it believed it empowered them with the promise of safety, health and plenty.
The lore of turquoise helps open the 8th Annual Palace Gem & Mineral Show, Sept. 27-29, in the Palace Courtyard. Join Museum of Indian Arts & Culture Curator Maxine McBrinn for a kickoff lecture on Friday, Sept. 27, at 6 pm, in the museum auditorium. “Turquoise, Water, Sky” focuses on the history of turquoise in the Southwest and its evolution as jewelry from prehistoric times to today.
Friday through Sunday, the shady Palace Courtyard will play host to a variety of exhibitors offering geodes, fossils, opals, turquoise and more for sale. Entry is free through the Blue Gate south of the History Museum’s main entrance on Lincoln Avenue.

Nice Jewish Cowboys and Cowgirls

Married to a Jewish merchant in Deming, NM, Ella Klauber Wormser took what may be the only photographs documenting the transition from cattle drives to rail transport in the late 1880s. Her contribution is but one of many made by Jewish pioneer families to the ranching heritage of New Mexico.
At 2 pm on Sunday, Oct. 27, the museum joins with the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society and Temple Beth Shalom to present “Nice Jewish Cowboys and Cowgirls” in the History Museum auditorium. The event is part of the exhibit Cowboys Real and Imagined. Free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents.

A Free First Friday Gallery Talk
When Ernie Pyle, an American correspondent in World War II, was killed by a sniper on the island of Ie Shima in April 1945, he had in his pocket the draft of a dispatch containing his deepest thoughts about the end of the war in Europe – a war that he had covered side by side with GIs during 2½ years of bitter combat. As part of the museum’s Free First Friday Gallery Talks, Palace Press Curator Tom Leech will reveal more of the surprising story of that dispatch, now on display in Telling New Mexico: Stories from Then and Now and his project recreating the column in booklet form.
Meet up with friends, learn a little something, and head onto dinner with the money you saved. The talks last 15-20 minutes and are repeated at 5:30 and 6:30 pm. Museum admission is free from 5-8 pm on the first Friday of the month, November through April.

An exploration of the dawn of world cuisine as we know—and consume it— today opened last year at the Museum of International Folk Art with New World Cuisine: The Histories of Chocolate, Mate y Más, on view through January 5, 2014.
Digging deeper into the topics covered in New World Cuisine will be FUZE.SW 2013. Santa Fe’s first-ever food conference of its kind takes place at the Museum of International Folk Art the weekend of November 8—10, 2013. James Beard Award-winning authors and chefs from across the US will gather with leading historians, archaeologists, cultural commentators, and folklorists to discuss and demonstrate how traditions and techniques from diverse heritages have intersected to create a culinary tradition uniquely New Mexican (and transported globally).
A series of talks, small breakout sessions, and panel discussions will delve into such areas as, “The Big Debate: Local Ingredients, Foreign Chefs,” “The Stories Cookbooks Tell: Cooking Culture,” “Recipes, Tales, and Traditions,” “Holy Mole: Chocolate—from Aztecs, to Chaco, to Hershey,” “North v. South: The Chile Wars.” These, and others, will be woven together by a series of artistic interludes, and keynotes by Dr. Jeffrey Pilcher (U Minnesota), Maricel Presilla, and Gustavo Arellano – and of course, food.

From 4–7 pm on Sunday, Nov. 17, the New Mexico History Museum joins with KNME-TV and La Fonda on the Plaza to celebrate that legacy with a fund-raising event for the museum’s exhibitions and public programming funds.
An Evening with the Harvey Girls begins with the premiere of Producer Katrina Parks’ new documentary, The Harvey Girls: Opportunity Bound, in the History Museum auditorium. Following the film, participants will enjoy an exclusive reception at La Fonda with Harvey House-inspired hors d’oeuvres and tours of newly renovated suites featuring the architectural and design legacies of Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter. Special guests include Parks; former Harvey Girls; and Stephen Fried, author of a 2010 book about the Harvey empire, Appetite for America.
