A Free First Friday Gallery Talk

As New Mexico morphed into the state we know today, its paper outlines changed the lives of those who called it home. Gather in the exhibition Telling New Mexico: Stories from Then and Now, where Librarian Tomas Jaehn will speak on "Mapping New Mexico," using three maps that demonstrate those changes—along with a cartographic error that determined who was American and who was Mexican.

Free museum admission to everyone from 5 to 8 pm.

Opening event for Setting the Standard: The Fred Harvey Company and Its Legacy
New Mexico History Museum

Exhibit opening

Be among the first to see this Mezzanine-area addition to the museum’s main exhibit, Telling New Mexico: Stories from Then and Now. Curated by Meredith Davidson, Setting the Standard: The Fred Harvey Company and Its Legacy focuses on the rise of the Fred Harvey Company as a family business and events that transpired specifically in the Land of Enchantment, including the invention of the Harvey Girls in Raton. The Winslow Harvey Girls host a trunk show of Harvey House china in our lobby. Also:

10 am, 11 am, noon and 4 pm, see The Harvey Girls: Opportunity Bound, a 57-minute documentary, in the museum auditorium

2 pm, gather in the auditorium for a conversation with curator Meredith Davidson, documentary producer Katrina Parks, and Stephen Fried, author of the acclaimed biography Appetite for America. Seating is limited; doors open at 1:30 pm.

3–4 pm, refreshments in the lobby

Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents; children 16 and under free daily

Christmas at the Palace

Santa Fe’s beloved Christmas at the Palace brings the community together for a 30th-anniversary evening of hot cider, cookies, live music, piñatas, craft-making activities, a chance to operate an antique printing press and the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Claus -- all in the legendary magic of the Palace of the Governors. A free, family event. (Donations of non-perishable food welcomed.)

The History Museum and Palace will close at 3 p.m. to prepare for this event. Enter through the Palace at 105 W. Palace Ave. The History Museum will remain closed during the event.

Children and grandchildren of the Palace Portal artisans will display their own creations at the Young Native Artists Holiday Show and Sale in the Meem Community Room and History Museum classroom. The annual candle-lit procession of Las Posadas travels around the Santa Fe Plaza and concludes in the Palace Courtyard. This version of an old Hispanic tradition with Holy Cross Church members and Coro de Agua Fria recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to give birth to the Baby Jesus – and throws in a few devils for good measure. Stay for carols in the Palace Courtyard, along with cookies and refreshments. Free and open to the public.

The History Museum and Palace will close at 3 pm to prepare for this event.

"Wearable Art" Jewelry Lecture

Keri Ataumbi Discusses Her Work

A multiple award winner at Indian Market and the Heard Museum Show, Keri Ataumbi will discuss her "wearable art" of silver and gold, often enhanced with precious and semi-precious gems, including turquoise.

Keri is of Kiowa and Italian heritage, and her work is steeped in both traditional and contemporary art streams. She creates jewelry based on a personal aesthetic of "content-based enquiry." As an example, some pieces have taken inspiration from the natural world and are enhanced with insects, plant life, or animals. Her eclectic, innovative, contemporary designs can be viewed not only as jewelry, but as stand alone art.

During this time, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them.

The event is always FREE and open to the public. Federal and State regulations prohibit the curators from appraising any artifact.
