Exhibit Opening - From Combat to Carpets: The Art of Afghan War Rugs
Museum of International Folk Art

War rugs “are the production of women artists, and of communities speaking globally not just locally,” said co-curator Annemarie Sawkins. “War rugs reflect Afghanistan’s historic and modern place as a busy cultural crossroads. They reveal the observant and innovative nature of the people who produced them.” Afghan “war rugs” gained international attention following the Soviet invasion of 1979 when millions of refugees fled to neighboring Pakistan and Iran. Join us for a special version of this traveling show including pieces from the MOIFA collection.

1:00 pm -  Talk by curator Annemarie Sawkins

2:00 pm - Refreshments provided by the Women’s Board.

New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra
National Hispanic Cultural Center

8 pm

In their fourth performance at the NHCC, the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra will again present a two-part show featuring an opening set of straight-up Latin jazz and a second set fusing the folkloric rhythms of Colombia with jazz elements and showcasing the versatility of the group’s musicians. The 13-piece ensemble seeks to showcase the great musical talents of artists who are now New Mexico residents, while bringing in international guest artists to introduce audiences to traditional instrumentation and rhythms from Latin America and demonstrate how jazz fusion can provide a harmonious and exciting blend of ancestral and contemporary tones.
