Cultural Memory and Amateur Film: The Visual Legacy of the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial

Please join Alison Griffiths, for an ON-LINE talk as part of our Friends of History Lecture series.

This lecture explores the vibrant history of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial (ITIC) from its inauguration in 1922 to the early 1940s. Drawing upon a treasure trove of materials on the ITIC from several regional archives, including the Palace of the Governors, Professor Alison Griffiths examines how photographs, films, posters, and other ephemera transport us into the rich history of Ceremonial that celebrated its centennial in 2022. These artifacts attest to the enduring legacy of the ITIC as a powerful symbol of Indigenous resilience with a rich record of visual, dance, and material culture. Special attention will be paid to amateur films of the ITIC made in the 1920s and 1930s, recordings capable of activating meanings that challenge notions of home movies as films without public value. The films were made by American geologist William Wrather and interweave footage of Wrather’s family with recordings of the parade and dances, bringing nuanced meanings to bear on the history of the ITIC.

Alison Griffiths is a Distinguished Professor of Film and Media Studies at Baruch College, The City University of New York, and a member of the doctoral faculty in Theatre at the CUNY Graduate Center.  She is the author of the multiple award-winning Wondrous Difference: Cinema, Anthropology, and Turn-of-the-Century Visual Culture (2002), Shivers Down Your Spine: Cinema, Museums, and the Immersive View (2008) and Carceral Fantasies: Cinema and Prison in Early Twentieth-Century America (2016) as well as over 50 journal articles and book chapters.  Her research has been supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, and grants from the NEH, ACLS, The Waterhouse Family Institute, the Institute for Citizens and Fellows, and the Huntington Library in Los Angeles among others. She was recently awarded a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Arctic Studies to Norway, where she will be undertaking research on early representations of Indigenous Sámi at the National Library of Norway in Oslo. Her latest book, Nomadic Cinema: A Cultural Geography of the Expedition Film, is forthcoming from Columbia University Press. You can learn more about her work at alisongriffiths.org.

Opening Reception: Miguel Trujillo and the Pursuit of Native Voting Rights
New Mexico History Museum
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Free Admission (5:00pm-7:00pm)

In celebration of a special exhibition entitled, “Miguel Trujillo and the Pursuit of Native Voting Rights” please join the New Mexico History Museum for an opening reception on August 4th, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s lobby.

The exhibition honors the 75th anniversary of the landmark court case, Trujillo v Garley, which granted Native New Mexicans the right to vote in US elections. The story is told through an interactive voting booth and shares the fascinating story of Native American suffrage. The ruling in 1948 removed legal and constitutional barriers to voting for Native Americans residing on tribal lands in New Mexico.

At the center of this effort is Miguel Trujillo (Isleta Pueblo), a WWII veteran and tribal educator. His tireless pursuit of equitable representation for his people is a noteworthy addition to better-known stories about women’s suffrage and African American voting rights.

Also featured in the exhibition are excerpts from the latest season of Encounter Culture, the official podcast of the Department of Cultural Affairs, produced with the support of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Museum admission is free to all visitors from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. as part of the First Friday Art Walk.

Indian Market Lecture Series-Free with Admission
New Mexico History Museum
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
C O N V E R G E N C E

Please join Virgil Ortiz, multimedia artist in our auditorium, as he shares his memories of Indian Market and expounds on his artforms. Ortiz remembers his parents and grandparents showing at Indian Market, a prestigious and curated show bringing together celebrated artists — steeped in rich tradition and exceptional traditional art. Ortiz was 6 years old and sold his first piece of pottery. Fast forward to the present day — the future brings innovation: utilizing age-old methods and materials connects him to our ancestors and brings prayer and critical teachings. Tying together the past, present, and future has been instilled in him for as long as he can remember. Converging many mediums has taken flight, inviting the audience on a journey into the future and new heights. Ortiz explains, "None of it is my talent; it’s way bigger than me, and I am just a bead in a necklace."

Ortiz’s work is featured in the museum’s exhibition, “Honoring Tradition and Innovation: 100-Years of Santa Fe’s Indian Market 1922-2022” which commemorates 100 years of Indian Market. The exhibition runs through August 31, 2023, so be sure to visit the museum before it ends.

Seating is limited-bottled water only please.

Free with museum admission

Let’s Take A Look with Curators
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Every Third Wednesday of the Month 12:00 pm through 2:00 pm

During Let’s Take a Look, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology wait in the lobby to look at your treasures. They will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. While our curators prefer to work with objects from the Southwest, they are willing to take a look at anything you might bring in. If they cannot identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can! Sometimes, the lively discussion among curators may provide as much insight as an accurate object identification itself.

The event is always free and open to the public, but please note Federal and State regulations prohibit the monetary appraisal of objects.
