San Ildefonso Storage Jar, c 1780

From the exhibition:
San Ildefonso Pottery: 1600 - 1930

Museum of Indian Arts and Culture

Large jars were set in the house for storing food, clothing, and water. The cosmological designs on the jar are prayers for goodness and for fertility of the world to help form the very substances being stored in the jar.
