Spanish Drawing of a Buffalo, 1598
This oldest-known field drawing of a buffalo accompanies the “Account of the journey of the cows of Cíbola” that Sergeant Major Vicente de Zaldívar made in the province of New Mexico. The Spanish named the buffaloes “cíbolas” because they lived on the plains in the region where they believed they would find the city of Cíbola.
