Gold earring

From the exhibition:
Santa Fe Found: Fragments of Time

New Mexico History Museum

This gold earring was recovered from a 17th-century deposit below the north wall of the Palace Print Shop during the New Mexico History Museum excavation. Found in the third week of the project, it caused great excitement among the archaeologists, as it was one of the few gold artifacts recovered from Colonial contexts in Santa Fe. Evoking images of well-dressed and accessorized 17th-century women, it is one of the few small personal possessions that speaks to the elite status of the governor and his family.
