Kit Carson

Legendary frontiersman Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson, shown here in an unattributed 1867 portrait, remains controversial to this day. He helped open the West, but his role in the Long Walk of Navajos and Mescalero Apache Indians to a Fort Sumner encampment still stirs debate.
