As a continued effort to shine light on the internment of Japanese Americans in New Mexico during WWII the museum is hosting a program with the Japanese American Citizen League as part of its “First Friday” lecture/program events. With support from the Humanities Council, the League is bringing Holly Yasui, the daughter of Minoru Yasui. Mr. Yasui was posthumously awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his efforts combating interment efforts during the war (in Oregon) and Holly is currently finishing a documentary about her father. There is an interesting NM connection with Nikki Louis, the head of the League. In 1984 there was a conference where Mr. Yasui spoke here in New Mexico about internment and as Nikki has explained, Mr. Yasui’s speech at this event changed Senator Pete Domenici’s stance on redress (apology and compensation to Japanese American camp survivors).
