Joaquin Lopez Antay, "Cross of the Passion," Ayacucho, Peru, ca. 1960 Wood, plaster, potato flour, paint, glass Museum of International Folk Art, IFAF Collection, DA.1979.9.1 .The Arma Cristi, or cross depicting symbols of the Passion, is a prominent theme in folk art of the Ayacucho region of Peru. This familiar silhouette has been transformed by Nicario Jimenez to illustrate the wounds of his community caught between the battling forces of the Shining Path Guerillas and the Military during Peru’s 20-year Internal Armed Conflict (1980-2000).
