Beloved Baumann Marionettes Take Center Stage at Museum’s Annual Holiday Open House

Santa Fe, NM (November 29, 2010)—A tradition that started in the Baumann’s living room to entertain their daughter has been taking place at the Museum for decades when their home was too small for the growing audience.

The New Mexico Museum of Art presents Baumann’s extraordinary hand-carved marionettes of Gustave Baumann, a Santa Fe arts legend. During the free Annual Holiday Open House, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on December 19, the historic marionettes perform two short plays for children of all ages.

Kids can sit very close to the stage, for an up-close experience with the magical Juan and Rosina, Miguelito, the burrow, and of course, Warts, the  rascally duende with a heart of gold.

A children’s “treasure hunt” will find Freckles, his twin brother, hiding in the museum galleries. Enjoy a photo opportunity with the Baumann Santa Claus marionette who, in a reversal of tradition, sits on your lap to grant holiday wishes. Families enjoy an arts and crafts project to make take-home puppet characters of their own, holiday music fills the air, and refreshments are served.

For more information the public may call 505-476-5068.

The New Mexico Museum of Art is located at 107 West Palace Avenue, on the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe.
