Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.

This week includes three outstanding programs:

Families are encouraged to join the Museum of International Folk Art for the next Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art at 10 a.m. on May 16. The online event features a grab-and-go art kit and access to a Zoom program that includes a story time and show-and-tell segment for children to share their art. The art kits are available for pick up the Friday and Saturday prior to the day of the event. The theme for the month of May is “All Together.” Register in advance here to receive the art kit, which will include instructions and supplies for the project. Supplies are limited, and kits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The latest episode of the podcast "La Hilacha: Words and Memories," produced by the History and Literary Arts program at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, features a discussion on the children’s book “Little Giants: 10 Hispanic Women Who Made History.” Written by Raynelda A. Calderon and illustrated by Wiscombe Donna, the book consists of short biographies of women across the global Hispanic diaspora and highlights the impact they’ve made in reshaping the world.

The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) will continue its monthly pottery demonstration series via Zoom on May 12. This next episode features MIAC’s 2020-2021 Living Treasure, Kathleen Wall (Jemez Pueblo). Raised in a family of potters, Wall has become known for transforming familiar storyteller figures into expressive, individualized sculptures. Register here for this free event.

Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:

•   In-person tours of the New Mexico History Museum are currently not available. Instead, museum docents will host free online tours via Zoom, with each tour lasting about 50 minutes. Click here for a schedule of tours during the month of May and to register.

•   The Historic Preservation Division continued its Facebook series “This Week in New Mexico History” on April 29, with a post about the Chimayo Trading Post and E.D. Trujillo House in Espanola, both of which are significant for its association with the 20 century evolution of Hispanic weaving in northern New Mexico. This series focuses on buildings and structures across the state listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
