Santa Fe—If you’ve been meaning to check out one of the New Mexico History Museum’s daily walking tours of downtown history, better get on board soon. The 2011 season ends Oct. 15.

Los Compadres del Palacio, a support group of the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors, operates the program with guides who are trained in Santa Fe history. (Many are also guides at the museum.) Proceeds from the tours benefit the museum’s programs and events.

The tours run mid-April-through-mid-October and take off Mondays through Saturdays at 10:15 am. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. Cost is $10; guides do not accept tips. Expect a leisurely pace and up to two hours of walking. Reservations are not necessary, but special group tours can be arranged by calling (505) 476-5200.

“We have the best and cheapest two hours of entertainment and knowledge available in Santa Fe, and the patrons seem to like us a lot,” said Pat Kuhlhoff.

So far this season, more than 840 adults and 51 children have taken the tours. The 18 docents leading them have contributed more than 400 hours of volunteer time to the museum, to New Mexicans, and to visitors.

The History Museum’s blog takes you on a virtual version of a tour. Check it out by clicking here.
