Alcoves 16/17 opens March 4, 2016 at the New Mexico Museum of Art. This will be the first in a series of seven alcove exhibitions that concludes on March 26, 2017. Each of the seven rotations will highlight five artists at various career stages and working in New Mexico today.

In this first of seven exhibitions, artists working in all media will be featured; Scott Anderson, Gloria Graham, Scott Greene, Herbert Lotz, and Bonnie Lynch.

The alcove shows format can be traced to the 1917 founding of the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico. Many of the artworks and artists who exhibited at those early days form the historic core of the museum’s permanent collection. Small one-person exhibitions were held in the gallery alcoves through the 1950s, resuming in the mid-1980s, again in the early 1990s. In 2012 the Museum of Art revived the alcove tradition as an artist-centered showcase to feature new ideas, artists at all stages of their careers, and artwork that is being made in New Mexico right now.

Exhibition curator Merry Scully said, “New Mexico’s rich arts community continues to draw artists to live and work in our state. Over these close to ten decades the Alcove exhibitions have always provided a snapshot of the artists working in New Mexico at that time. It seems only fitting for the museum to organize a year of these artist centered alcove exhibitions in anticipation of the Museum’s upcoming centennial.”
