Museum Announces Events in Conjunction with exhibition Da Vinci—The Genius

(Albuquerque, NM) – In conjunction with the world-class Da Vinci—The Genius exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science from February 10 through July 29, 2018, the museum is hosting many da Vinci-related events. The events include $5 First Fridays, adult party nights, lectures, and panel discussions.
On the first Friday of each month, the Museum offers themed $5 First Fridays:
The $22 da Vinci exhibition admission will be discounted by $5 during the evening activities held from 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. During Da Vinci—The Genius, each night focuses on a different area of the exhibition.
- February 2: Preparing for da Vinci | Preview fun activities available at events during the exhibition.
- March. 2: da Vinci & Anatomy | Anatomy experts will describe how they teach the structure of the human body.
- April. 6: da Vinci & Flight | Learn how da Vinci’s study of natural flight eventually lead to all modern aircraft.
- May 4: da Vinci & Military Innovations | See how modern defensive systems work, some of which were inspired by da Vinci’s drawings.
- June 1: da Vinci & Technology | Discover how mechanical technology from the Renaissance is used to explore other planets.
- July 6: da Vinci & Earth Science | Learn about da Vinci’s observations on the land, sea, and sky.
Three Adult Nights will be held during da Vinci:
The events run from 6:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Tickets are $27 per person for ages 21 and older and include admission to the exhibition.
- Feb. 16: Date Night with da Vinci | Valentines Party; Write a love poem and enjoy a cash bar and dancing.
- Apr. 20: Reliving the Renaissance | Dress as a Renaissance character and learn period dances; cash bar included.
- June 15: Libations & Leonardo | Create your own masterpiece, dance, and sample wine from a cash bar.
Lectures & Panel Discussions:
A series of six lectures/panel discussions are planned. Each is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Admission is $8, $7 members, $5 students; includes $5 discount coupon to da Vinci exhibition.
- Feb. 28: Dr. Luis Campos - Leonardo’s Many Lives | Discover da Vinci’s place in the history of science.
- Mar. 14: Dr. Andrew Connors - Da Vinci, Artist or Scientist? | Why does everyone love the Mona Lisa?
- Apr. 25: Experts from NASA, Intel, Sandia Labs, NM Highlands Media Arts and Acoma Pueblo - Science and Technology: Past and Present | Scientists, engineers, computer graphics experts, and educators discuss this intersection of disciplines.
- May 9: Dr. Gary Rosenberg, Milwaukee Public Museum - Art and Geoscience: Leonardo’s Landscapes | Discover da Vinci’s use of geology in his art.
- May 23: Experts from UNM, The Planetary Science Institute, Intel, and Meow Wolf - Science and Art: Intersections | Meet artists using a variety of media and scientists who integrate art into their research.
- July 18: Dr. Miriam Franchina, Italian Historian - Leonardo | Explore the time and place of da Vinci’s genius and his legacy in modern Italy.
Workshops:
Four workshops are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. - noon on the dates below. Sign up is $50, $45 members; includes admission to the da Vinci exhibition the same day.
- Apr. 14: Dr. Natalie Elliot - Leonardo’s Machines | Discover how Leonardo conceived of machines.
- June 9 & 10: Michelle Korte and Cirrelda Snider-Bryan - Modern Mona Lisa: Low Relief Pulp Portraits | Create a portrait in the da Vinci style using pigmented recycled paper pulp.
- June 23: Matt Celeskey, Scientific Illustrator and Artist - Introduction to Scientific Illustration | Examine Leonardo’s style of observation and artistic creativity and sketch objects from the Museum’s collection.
- June 30 & July 1: Michelle Korte and Cirrelda Snider-Bryan - Reinventing Anatomy: Paper Pulp Sculpture | Use da Vinci’s drawings of anatomy to inform your 3D portrait sculpture using found objects.
