The Gustave Baumann marionettes have entertained generations of Santa Feans every Christmas in St. Francis Auditorium. The marionettes, props, and other stage material have been used in Christmas productions since 1935.

Originally intended to amuse their daughter Anne in their home, Baumann’s marionettes quickly became well-known in the Santa Fe community and performances were soon offered annually in St. Francis auditorium in the Museum.

The motley crew of puppets used today are exact replicas of the originals on view in the Museum’s second floor gallery exhibition, Pulling String: The Marionettes and Art of Gustave Baumann.

This traditional holiday open house is Sunday, December 20, 2009 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and is open free to all. Refreshments will be served.

Children of all ages are invited to sit for a photograph taken by their parents with Santa descending from the stage to sit on their lap and chat.

Other photo opportunities abound for parents throughout the afternoon.  Children can enjoy the craft project “Make Your Own Puppet Characters,” track down that ever pesky marionette in the “Find Freckles” gallery activity, and, parents, the Museum courtyard is a lovely bit of quiet and calm.

Again, the Museum encourages those attending to donate non-perishable food in the barrel located in the lobby for The Food Depot. As the food bank for seven northern New Mexico counties, The Food Depot provides food to 100 not-for-profit agencies including emergency food pantries, hot meal programs, homeless shelters, youth programs, senior centers, homes of the mentally disabled, and shelters for battered persons.

For more information the public may call 505-476-5072. The New Mexico Museum of Art is located on Palace Avenue on the historic Santa Fe Plaza.
