Community-in-Residence Meets Shakespeare

February 08, 2016

Join local arts organizations and Gary Glazner, founder of the internationally acclaimed Alzheimer’s Poetry Project, for a fun-filled morning of creating poetry and song inspired by The Book’s the Thing: Shakespeare from Stage to Page. This event is crafted especially for people with memory illnesses and their care partners, though everyone is welcome to participate.

Meet at the New Mexico History Museum, 113 Lincoln Avenue in Santa Fe, on Tuesday, February 23, from 10–11 am. Community-in-Residence is a free event during which we’ll explore Shakespeare’s famous quotes in a spirit of creativity, playfulness and learning, and then invent a performance inspired by his work.

Community-in-Residence builds on the concept of an artist-in-residence program, which typically invites artists, poets, musicians, academicians, curators, and all manner of creative people to enjoy a time and space away from the usual environment and obligations. Sessions use pieces of artwork to spark thoughts and memories from the participants, who create music, poetry, stories and, sometimes, artwork of their own.

Past Community-in-Residence events have featured partnerships with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum; Museum of International Folk Art; New Mexico History Museum; Santa Fe Opera; and SITE Santa Fe. Other participating organizations include the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project, the Lifesongs program of the Academy for the Love of Learning, Santa Fe Care Center, Vista Living, and the Alzheimer’s Creativity Project.

Worldwide, more than 65 million people live with Alzheimer’s or related dementia illnesses. Increasing research shows that creative arts therapies can help foster engagement, mental stimulation, conversation, self-esteem and self-expression, as well as cope with behavioral challenges and improve overall well-being.

This event is partially funded by the Santa Fe Arts Commission, New Mexico Arts, and the Poetry Foundation. Special thanks to everyone at the Academy for the Love of Learning for their support.
