The New Mexico History Museum and Palace of the Governors invite you to explore various aspects of history, from long gone to very recent. Here’s what’s up in April:

Friday, April 1, 6 pm: “A Fragile Legacy: Earthen Architecture in New Mexico”

Jake Barrow, acting executive director at Cornerstones Community Partnerships, speaks on New Mexico’s favorite building material and the need to preserve it in structures like the Palace of the Governors. This is a Free First Friday Evening event. Admission to the History Museum and Palace is free to everyone from 5–8 pm.

Friday, April 8, 9 am: CreativeMornings tackles risk

Artist Rose B. Simpson explores the global theme of “risk” at the latest installment of CreativeMornings. Enjoy networking with other creative professionals before the talk, along with coffee and pastries courtesy of Iconik Coffee Roasters. Free.

Saturday, April 9, 10 am–1:30 pm: Celebrating Creativity in Elder Care

Develop art- and dance-related techniques to reach people with memory illnesses from nationally renowned presenters, including Maria Genné of the Minnesota-based dance troop Kairos Alive! and Gary Glazner, poet and founder of the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project. Monday, April 11: Historical Downtown Walking Tours resume

Mondays through Saturdays continuing through October 15, learn about the history of Santa Fe on a Historical Downtown Walking Tour led by museum-trained guides. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Avenue at 10:15 am. Cost: $10; children 16 and under free when with an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. (No tours on Saturdays when large events are held on the Plaza, such as Spanish Market and Santa Fe Fiesta.)

Sunday, April 17, 1:30–3:30 pm: Families Make History monthly workshop

Make paper flower pots and plant seeds in them. Bring surplus seeds from last year’s garden and trade them for a more diverse bounty. Learn green-thumb tips from a Master Gardener. Free with admission. Sundays free to NM residents; children 16 and under free daily. Families Make History free workshops are held the third Sunday of every month.

Thursday, April 21, noon: Brainpower & Brownbags Lecture

New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles W. Daniels speaks on “Justice is Coming: An Illustrated History of the Justice System in the Territory and State of New Mexico." Lectures are free in the Meem Community Room. Enter through the Washington Avenue doors.

Tuesday–Friday, April 26 – 29: Arizona Adventure

Travel with the History Museum to relax at Winslow’s La Posada Harvey House, visit private Frank Lloyd Wright properties, stay at Scottsdale’s mid-century cool Valley Ho, and enjoy an exclusive tour of the Heard Museum’s newest exhibit, Over the Edge: Fred Harvey at the Grand Canyon and in the Great Southwest. $1,074 single; $975 double. Sunday, May 1, 12–4 pm: Opening of Lowriders, Hoppers and Hot Rods: Car Culture of Northern New Mexico

Be among the first to see our newest exhibit and the kickoff of "Lowrider Summer." Opening events include a free photo booth, looped screenings of the film, South American Cho Low, and a 2 pm lecture about the history of the nationally renowned Lowrider Magazine by Albuquerque correspondent and photographer Travis Ruiz. Sunday, May 1: Summer hours begin.

Through October, the New Mexico History Museum and Palace of the Governors will be open daily, 10 am–5 pm, with Free Friday Evenings every week, 5–8 pm.
