FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Albuquerque, NM (Nov. 1, 2016)The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science announces the focus of this “First Friday” is a sendoff for StartUp, the Museum’s computer revolution exhibition. The exhibition is closing in mid-November so this evening will feature a final fling with the fledgling computers!  Several educational organizations will offer fun activities related to changing technology and computers. The list of exhibitors includes the Bradbury Science Museum, Intel NM, Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM Supercomputing Challenge, Sandia National Laboratories, UNM Civil Engineering Department, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

StartUp is the first museum exhibition dedicated to the history of the microcomputer—the little machine that revolutionized the way we live, work and play. The gallery features one-of-a-kind artifacts, video and interactive displays, including “Rise of the Machines” —an immersive multimedia theater experience.  Born from the desire of philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen to give back to the Albuquerque community where he and Bill Gates spent their early professional years starting Microsoft, the STARTUP gallery at NMMNHS brings to life the excitement that characterized the early days of the personal computer revolution. Museum admission for the event will be $5 per person. The DynaTheater will present Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs at 6:30 p.m. for only $5 per person in addition to museum admission. That means you can see a movie and tour the entire museum for what it normally costs an adult to see the DynaTheater alone!  Admission to Fractal Fridays in the planetarium is the same as it has been for years: $10 adults, $7 seniors, $5 children. There is no need to purchase a museum or DynaTheater ticket to see the planetarium; they are sold separately.

The museum’s observatory will open at 7pm, weather permitting. At 6pm, a member of the space science department will present a brief, free talk about what to look for in the current sky in the new STEM Auditorium.

Doors open at 5:30pm. A food truck will be serving outside of the museum from 5 to 8 p.m. Museum admission and DynaTheater Tickets can be purchased at the admission desk. Seats are limited for the fractal programs. Go to http://www.brownpapertickets.com/producer/17643 to purchase your fractal tickets prior to the evening in order to ensure your seat.

Price:

$5 Museum admission; $5 DynaTheater admission in addition to museum admission;
