FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 6, 2017 (Santa Fe, NM)—Sunday, September 24, the Museum Hill Partners ( which include the International Folk Art Alliance, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, the National Park Service, Santa Fe Botanical Garden, and the Wheelwright Museum of The American Indian) join forces for Community Day—a day of fun, free, family-friendly events celebrating the resources on Museum Hill. Additionally, admission to all museums and the botanical garden is free.

The 2017 event also commemorates the 15th anniversary of the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, the 30th anniversary of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, and the 80th anniversary of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.

“This special day is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to our community of museum lovers from New Mexico and beyond for supporting our museums and botanical garden with your interest and enthusiasm,” said Department of Cultural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Veronica Gonzales.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, 710 Camino Lejo 10 am – 5 pm, Meem Hall, Laboratory of Anthropology (next door), final day of Native Treasures Collector’s Sale, a unique sale of Native American jewelry and art from private collections benefitting MIAC
1–2:30 pm, panel discussion: “The Relevance of Native Voice in Museums with Native Collections” 3–4:30 pm, panel discussion: MIAC Director Della Warrior joins three former museum directors for a retrospective of the first 30 years of MIAC Also: mural painting, storytelling, and birthday cake

Museum of International Folk Art, 706 Camino Lejo 1–4 pm, Neutrogena Lounge, live music by the Varsity Marimba Band of the Academy of Art and Technology Charter School 1–4 pm, atrium, hands-on art making for ages 3 to 103: Make notched, layered paper photo frames in conjunction with the exhibition No Idle Hands: The Myths and Meanings of Tramp Art. 1 pm, Milner Plaza Labyrinth, Circle of Open Hearts Community Labyrinth Walk with the Labyrinth Resource Group 2 pm, book signing for Borderless: The Art of Luis Tapia (2017 University of Oklahoma Press), the story of pioneering New Mexican sculptor, Luis Tapia

International Folk Art Alliance—Outdoor classroom, Milner Plaza 11 am and 2 pm All-age tie-dye workshops with master artist Gasali Adeyamo

Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, 750 Camino Lejo 9 am–3 pm, matanza (traditional pig roast) $12 per person all you can eat, drinks included 11:30 am and 1 pm, author and historian Nasario Garcia reads his new children’s book, Grandpa Lolo’s Matanza (Rio Grande Books, 2016) 10 am and 1:15 pm Live cigar-box guitar music by Cipriano Vigil

Santa Fe Botanical Garden, 715 Camino Lejo 9 am–3 pm, family horno baking—including flat breads, cookies, and s’mores! Plus: herbal iced tea sampling. The Botanical Garden will be serving samples of iced tea made from herbs grown on their agricultural terraces. 9 am–5 pm, docent tours: Take guided a tour through the garden and learn how to incorporate these plants into your own backyard.   10 am–3 pm, demonstration: weaving and fiber spinning

The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, 704 Camino Lejo Storytelling with Joe Hayes in our Library (two sessions) Taqueria Gracias Madre food truck Treasure hunts for kids in the galleries Beading demonstration by Wendy Boivin, Menominee Native dancing by the Black Mesa Dancers, San Ildefonso Pueblo

National Park Service—Meet in the Wheelwright parking lot 9 am and 11 am, moderate hiking tour of Santa Fe Trail remnants on Museum Hill with    volunteers from the Santa Fe Trail Association
