(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – New Mexico Historic Sites offer a place to experience history where it happened. The following events are planned at the sites during the remainder of 2018.

WHAT: Dig Giusewa. WHERE: Jemez Historic Site, 18160 Hwy 4, Jemez Springs, NM 87025. WHEN: Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday between Aug. 16 and Oct. 6, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Explore the ruins of Giusewa Pueblo with archaeologists from New Mexico Historic Sites and Native American tribal members from Jemez Pueblo. Watch as they sift through the earth finding artifacts and features more than 500 years old. Ask questions and learn what makes Jemez Historic Site such a remarkable place. Ranger led tours of the archaeological excavation and the historic site will occur at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily, self-guided tours are available at any time. WHAT: Summer Letters from the Reservation WHERE: Ft. Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial 3647 Billy the Kid Dr, Fort Sumner, NM 88119 WHEN: Saturday August 25, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. DESCRIPTION: “Summer Letters from the Reservation.”  These letters and oral histories read in chronological order, represent the lives of the people on the Bosque Redondo Reservation as well as the policies employed by the U.S. government toward Navajo and Mescalero Apache people from the months of June, July, and August 1863 to1868.  A free light supper will be served (first come first serve) from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.  Brats, a Texas BBQ hotdog, an Italian style hotdog (bell peppers, onions, and a cream sauce), baked beans, potato salad, iced tea, and cobbler for dessert.  Supper will be followed by the letter reading at the Mescalero Apache Prayer Circle until 7:30 pm complete with a campfire.  This event is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

WHAT: Fort Stanton After Dark WHERE: Ft. Stanton Historic Site, Capitan, NM, take 380 South of Capitan, left on 220 WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 25, 6-9 p.m. DESCRIPTION: During 160 years in operation, Fort Stanton’s served as an Army post, tuberculosis sanatorium, internment camp and correctional facility. During the After Dark events visitors can explore the grounds and buildings of Lincoln and Fort Stanton, interact with costumed living historians, storytellers, and investigators from the Lincoln County Paranormal Historical Society. The self-guided tours will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. Cost is $5 per person, Kids under 10 are free.

WHAT: 98th Birthday Salute to J. Paul Taylor WHERE: New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road, Las Cruces WHEN: Sunday, Aug. 26, 3:30-5:30 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Each year, we honor our friend and civic leader, J. Paul Taylor with a special membership gathering and festive celebration of his birthday.  Come greet Mr. Taylor and join the Friends of the Taylor Family Monument as they work to support New Mexico’s newest historic site! The party will be held in Las Cruces at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. Admission is the membership fee. For information contact the Friends at ftfm.mesilla.nm@gmail.com

WHAT: Apple Harvest, Cultura y Naturaleza (Culture and Nature) Series WHERE: Los Luceros Historic Property, Off State Route 68, Alcalde, NM WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Apple picking, two live concerts, vendors and food trucks, tours and demonstrations, evening outdoor movie. From ancient pueblo settlements to Spanish colonial haciendas, Los Luceros Historic Property has provided a bountiful life for people through the centuries. New Mexicans are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy on the banks of the Río Grande or under the shade of the historic apple orchard. Admission to the Cultura y Naturaleza (Culture and Nature) series of events at Los Luceros will be free

WHAT: New Mexico Archaeology Fair. WHERE: Jemez Historic Site, 18160 Hwy 4, Jemez Springs, NM 87025. WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Presented by the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, the 18th annual New Mexico archaeology Fair is a chance for children and adults to participate in hands-on demonstrations and activities associated with cultures that trace their origins back thousands of years. These include yucca fiber bracelet making, painting with bee weed, corn grinding, atlatl throwing and much more. Visitors will also can tour an ongoing archaeological dig inside Jemez Historic Site’s Giusewa Pueblo. There is no fee for admission or any of the family friendly activities related to this event. WHAT: Star-Gazing in Jemez WHERE: Jemez Historic Site, 18160 Hwy 4, Jemez Springs, NM 87025. WHEN: Saturday, October 13, 7-10 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Star-gazing at the Jemez Historic Site as the - moon is a waxing crescent. The Albuquerque Astronomy Club is volunteering their time. Free event, donations welcome.

WHAT: Fiesta of Cultures. WHERE: Coronado Historic Site, 485 Kuaua Road, Bernalillo, NM 87004. WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Come celebrate New Mexico’s diverse and unique cultures! Enjoy Native American dances, Conquistador reenactors, cowboy music, arts and crafts fair, archaeology demonstrations, live animals, and much more. Call 505-867-5351 for more information.   WHAT: Voices from the Past: Moonlight Tours WHERE: Fort Selden Historic Site, 1280 Fort Selden Road, Radium Springs, NM 88054 WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 20, 6-9 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Join us for a special moonlight tour in honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System. Walk on an authentic portion of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail. Meet historical figures from the past camped at Paraje de Robledo! Tours leave every 15 minutes. Admission: $5 for adults. Kids are free. Tickets sold at the door. Cash or check only.  All activities are outside, please dress warmly. Sponsored by the Museum of NM Foundation. WHAT: Lincoln After Dark WHERE: Lincoln Historic Site, Lincoln, NM WHEN: Friday, Oct. 26, 6-9 p.m. DESCRIPTION: With infamy gained through the Lincoln County Wars, and the lives of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, the history of Lincoln, New Mexico is riddled with acts of revenge, vigilante justice and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886, more than 50 people met a violent end along the main road.  During the After Dark events visitors can explore the grounds and buildings of Lincoln, interact with costumed living historians, storytellers, and investigators from the Lincoln County Paranormal Historical Society. The self-guided tours will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. Cost is $5 per person, Kids under 10 are free.

WHAT: Light among the Ruins – Christmas Celebration. WHERE: Jemez Historic Site, 18160 Hwy 4, Jemez Springs, NM 87025. WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 8, 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. DESCRIPTION: The ruins of Giusewa Pueblo and San José de los Jemez Mission will be decorated with hundreds of farolitos. The evening’s program will include traditional Native American flute music and Jemez Pueblo dancers’ performing between two illuminating bon-fires. The Historic Site will also host an arts and crafts fair and have food available for purchase. Call 575-829-3530 for more information.

WHAT: Las Noches de Las Luminarias WHERE: Fort Selden Historic Site, 1280 Fort Selden Road, Radium Springs, NM 88054 WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 15, 6-9 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Join us for this Southwest tradition as over eight hundred glowing candles surround the fort ruins. Enjoy holiday music, a cozy campfire, and a warm cup of cocoa as you tour the grounds. Make your own holiday decorations while you enjoy the sights and sounds of the season. Please dress warmly. WHAT: Nacimiento Open House with J. Paul Taylor WHERE: Taylor-Mesilla Historic Property, Old Mesilla, NM WHEN: Sunday, Dec. 16, 1-4 p.m. DESCRIPTION: Join us for a fascinating afternoon as you view more than 175 nacimientos (nativity) scenes on display in the Taylor family home. Mr. Taylor’s collection includes nacimientos from all over the world. This impressive collection is a joy to see and the open house has become a local holiday tradition. The home is located at 2346 Calle Principal on the Old Mesilla Plaza. Free to members. $5 for non-members.  

About New Mexico Historic Sites: http://nmhistoricsites.org/ On March 14, 1931, the New Mexico Historic Site system was established by an Act for the Preservation of the Scientific Resources of New Mexico, to "declare by public proclamation that historic and prehistoric structures and other objects of scientific interest that are situated upon the lands owned or controlled by the State of New Mexico, shall be state monuments, and may reserve as a part thereof such parcels of land as may be necessary to the proper care and management of the objects to be protected." Under the direction of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, six sites are open to the public: Coronado, Fort Selden, Fort Stanton, Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial, Jemez, and Lincoln. The Los Luceros Historic Property is open to the public during scheduled events and by appointment (505) 476-1130. In 2004, the J. Paul Taylor Family bequeathed the Barela-Reynolds House and Property on the Mesilla Plaza to the Department of Cultural Affairs.  Still serving as J. Paul Taylor’s private home, the property will become a Historic Site after his passing.
