(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – Join the Museum of Indians Arts and Culture (MIAC) for an outdoors Earth Day celebration from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a lecture, book signing, and reception from 2:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2019.

Arnold Herrera (Cochiti Pueblo) will present a traditional blessing on Milner Plaza at 10:00 a.m. followed by hands-on activities including Southwest Native American gardening and planting techniques in the lower amphitheater and Avanyu Garden area. Participants will plant seeds in bio-friendly pots, and so, program coordinators advise attendees to dress appropriately. Light refreshments will be available and all activities will end at 2:00 p.m. MIAC’s Earth Day Celebration funding is provided by the Ludwig and Nancy Sternberger Charitable Foundation and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.

After MIAC’s Earth Day Celebration, Valerie Rangel, author of Environmental Justice in New Mexico: Counting Coup, and Bob Haozous, collaborator, will give a lecture from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in MIAC’s O’Keeffe Theater. Rangel’s book demonstrates how expansion and illegal waste dumping disproportionately affect communities of color and Indigenous populations. The stories illustrate the fight for environmental justice as communities protect New Mexico’s land and the people impacted by U.S. and corporate sanctioned actions. Following the lecture, Rangel and Haozous will be available for book signings at the reception from 3:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Valerie Rangel’s Environmental Justice in New Mexico: Counting Coup, with forward by Bob Haozous, will not be sold at the event but is available for purchase at Collected Works, Garcia Street Books and UNM bookstores. Online retailers include Amazon.com, Target.com, and BarnesandNoble.com.
