(Albuquerque, NM) –The possibility of people flying, like birds, mystified man until he figured out how to do it. Centuries before the American Wright brothers launched their flying machine, acclaimed Italian genius Leonardo da Vinci worked to find a practical solution to the challenge of flight. He studied the flights and physical structure of birds, making detailed drawings of flight and several mechanical wing devices.  He designed many mechanical devices, including parachutes.  About 1485, da Vinci drew detailed plans for a human-powered ornithopter, a wing-flapping device intended to fly.  The image he presented is a powerful one, however there is no evidence da Vinci ever tried to build such a device.

The journey to reach the stars began with our earliest dreams of flying and led to landing on the moon and sending a probe to Pluto. But that’s only the beginning.  The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science DynaTheater’s current film, Space Next 3D offers a stunning glimpse into yesterday’s accomplishments, today’s science and tomorrow’s possibilities of what is to come by way of private space developments and national space programs

Space Next 3D is shown daily in the DynaTheater at 1:00PM & 4:00PM. Tickets to the DynaTheater are in addition to Museum admission.  Adults (13-59) $7, Seniors (60+) $6, Children (3-12) $5.

Space Next takes audiences on a remarkable journey of mankind’s pursuit of the stars,” said Margie Marino, Executive Director of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, home to the Dyna Theater. “Space Next brings us up to speed on where we’ve been, where we are now, and boldly ventures beyond today to tell the story of where we are going; all in breathtaking, state-of-the art imagery and evocative sound design to transport audiences to the future.”

Afterglow Studios worked with leading scientists and consultants from NASA and other institutions to create the visuals and story of Space Next. The film presents actual possibilities of what lies in the future of space development and exploration. The attention to detail of the visual effects are perfect for this topic on the Giant Screen.

“The Space Next 3D presentation in the DynaTheater is a perfect introduction to the blockbuster exhibition we have coming in February 2018, Da Vinci—The Genius,” said Marino. “This 3D film studies the origins of flight, and aviation was, perhaps, Leonardo da Vinci’s favorite subject among his many areas of study.”

Beginning February 10, 2018, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and Grande Exhibitions will present Da Vinci – The Genius, the most comprehensive exploration of Leonardo da Vinci’s work ever created, for a limited engagement in Albuquerque. The interactive experience will immerse guests in Leonardo’s timeless brilliance through full-scale interpretations of the mastermind’s inventions and unparalleled studies of his iconic art.

Da Vinci – The Genius demonstrates the full scope of Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable genius as an inventor, artist, anatomist, sculptor, engineer, musician and architect. Guests will enjoy many unique pieces including life-size machine inventions, entertaining animations of da Vinci’s most notable Renaissance works and an eye-opening, in-depth analysis of his most famous piece, “Mona Lisa.” Visitors will be able to push, pull, crank and interact with many of these exhibits for a hands-on understanding of the scientific principles behind them.

Created with the assistance of the Museo Leonardo da Vinci – Rome, Italy, and many experts in Italy and France, Da Vinci – The Genius celebrates one of the most revered and dynamic minds of all time. The exhibition features 17 compelling themed areas of da Vinci’s work, offering visitors an unmatched look inside the mind of the ultimate Renaissance man who laid the groundwork for some of modern society’s most impactful inventions, such as the helicopter, airplane, automobile, submarine, parachute and bicycle.

Doors open to the public on February 10, 2018.  Prices are $22 per ticket.  Da Vinci – The Genius will be open daily from 9:00AM-5:00PM
