(Santa Fe, NM)— The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) announces its newest series of Pueblo Pottery Demonstrations beginning March 13, continuing April 10 and concluding May 8, 2019. Each demonstration will run from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the museum employing modern styles cultivated from traditional practices. MIAC brings artists from San Ildefonso Pueblo, Zia Pueblo, and Santa Clara Pueblo to share how their cultures influence their techniques and artistry.

In addition to the Living Treasures exhibition and the Memorial Day Weekend Art Market, MIAC and MNMF will introduce the 2019 Living Treasures Artist Celebration. The celebration honors Mateo and Diego Romero as the 2019 Living Treasures artist award recipients for their contributions to indigenous arts and culture.

Brain: The Inside Story draws on the most current research and technology to present the latest in neuroscience, highlighting the brain’s surprising ability to rewire itself in response to experience, disability or trauma. Organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York with other international partners, the exhibition also showcases modern technologies that researchers use to study the brain. Brain: The Inside Story will be on exhibition from Feb. 23 through June 23, 2019.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – This is the story of a place - a place where millions of years of the earth’s development are openly revealed and where the hopes and aspirations of the human race have been inscribed for centuries. The place now known as Glen Canyon on the Colorado River has inspired artists since the time of its first human inhabitants.
This March 30 through Sept. 15, 2019, the New Mexico Museum of Art opens The Great Unknown: Artists at Glen Canyon and Lake Powell which explores how Glen Canyon and its later incarnation as Lake Powell become a catalyst for art, social action, and an examination of human values. Central to the narrative is the history of land use and environmentalism in the West and how artists respond to the work of their predecessors.
Located in canyon country along the Colorado River, Glen Canyon stretches from southeastern Utah down into northern Arizona, not far upriver from the more famous Grand Canyon. The canyon was carved into the rock of the Colorado Plateau by drops of water and attracted the attention of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in the 1950s, when it was looking for a place to build a dam. Amid much controversy, Glen Canyon Dam was completed in 1966 to generate hydroelectric power, thus submerging much of Glen Canyon under a reservoir called Lake Powell.

Normally held in May, this year’s Flea is jumping to June—Saturday, June 8. The Flea also is moving outdoors. Look for the big tent on Milner Plaza on Museum Hill where this year’s Flea treasures will be waiting for new homes. The large tent will be easy to spot and will provide a roomy and shaded location for shoppers to peruse this year’s folk art finds.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) is pleased to present its latest exhibition opening in Feb. 23 to Oct. 27, 2019, Beyond Standing Rock. The exhibition takes a look at one of the most widespread grassroots movements in recent history, highlighting works created at the protest by Native and non-Native artists. From early 2016 to early 2017, the Sioux Nation (Očhéthi Šakówiŋ) of Standing Rock Reservation protested corporate abuses of Native sovereignty and welfare. The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) planned construction through Standing Rock reservation, violating the 1851 Fort Laramie treaty and compromising the Sioux Nation’s access to clean water. As the movement grew, more than one hundred Native nations and allies gathered together to preserve the land through peaceful protest. The protest gained international attention through images, videos, and posters.

Many indigenous communities throughout the New World do not have written languages. This means that traditional cultural knowledge of those communities has to be passed orally from one generation to the next. Music often plays a pivotal role in how communities pass on knowledge, specifically during participation in seasonal cultural activities. The focus of this presentation will be on storytelling through music as learned and taught by a Jemez Pueblo tribal member. The event is Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 2 p.m at the DeLavy House.

The New Mexico Museum of Space History has acquired a German Tornado jet fighter and plans to move the vehicle from Holloman Air Force Base thru Alamogordo to the Otero County Fairgrounds on Saturday, January 12. A public event is planned for Sunday, Jan. 13, followed by a sponsor event Jan. 14, with the final move to the museum of Jan. 15.
The aircraft will be towed roughly 16 miles on its landing gear from the flight line at Holloman AFB to the La Luz Gate, along La Luz Road to Hwy 54/70, where it will turn on the highway and move to the Otero County Fairgrounds. It will stay at the Fairgrounds Jan. 12-15, and on Jan. 15 it will make its final journey along Fairgrounds Road and Scenic Drive to the Museum.
The media is invited to attend the move and/or the public event. Because of the logisitics of the move, it will be necessary for attending media to register prior to COB January 10.

Crittendenceratops krzyzanowskii is a new ceratopsid (horned) dinosaur from 73-million-year-old (Late Cretaceous) rocks in southern Arizona. It is one of the few dinosaurs named from Arizona.
