(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Veronica Gonzales today announced the hiring of new State Librarian Eli Guinnee, who comes to New Mexico from Jamestown, New York. Guinnee was previously the Executive Director of Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System in Jamestown, overseeing 38 public and tribal libraries in western New York.

(Alcalde, NM) - The Los Luceros Fall Apple Festival on Sunday, September 16, 2018 from Noon to 4 p.m.
“We’ve got a bumper crop of apples to be picked during the beautiful New Mexico autumn on this idyllic property which will certainly make for a perfect day to enjoy this treasured historic property,” said Patrick Moore, the director of New Mexico Historic Sites.
New Mexicans are encouraged to bring the whole family for a fun afternoon in Alcalde. The Fall Apple Festival will include an educational presentation on heritage apples, demonstrations of apple cooking ideas with take-home recipes, a cider pressing demonstration, live music, and tours of the historic ranch buildings. There will also be an exhibition space for area agricultural groups offering resources including the FFA, 4HA and extension office. The festival will be held at the the Los Luceros historic property located off State Route 68 in Alcalde, New Mexico.

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) – Lost on Rio Grande Boulevard in Albuquerque in the late summer of 2013, Snaplet the snapping turtle is thriving in her newly upgraded habitat inside a large aquarium in the Naturalist Center at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.
When found on the road north of the Museum by a volunteer biking to work, Snaplet was a tiny hatchling with a 1.5” shell who may have been trying to find her way to the river. Snaplet’s story is a unique because the Museum does not advocate, endorse or otherwise encourage removal of wildlife, nor does the Museum accept live animals for donation.
“She looked like a walking clump of mud,” commented Naomy Riley, a long time Museum volunteer.
