The New Mexico State Library has chosen The Wolves of Currumpaw, written and illustrated by William Grill, published by Flying Eye Books, as the book which will represent New Mexico in the Pavilion of the States at the 2017 National Book Festival. Mr. Grill is a London based illustrator whose main interest lies in narrative illustration and publishing. He draws most of his inspiration from the natural world, and enjoys working in colored pencils and relief printmaking. His books have won multiple awards and have been translated into more than 14 languages. Mr. Grill said, “What an amazing surprise! I am so pleased. I am so happy to have been chosen and I’m so glad The Wolves of Currumpaw has been positively received by the New Mexico State Library.”

Researchers using Los Alamos’ unique neutron-imaging and high-energy X-ray capabilities have exposed the inner structures of the fossil skull of a 74-million-year-old tyrannosauroid dinosaur nicknamed the Bisti Beast in the highest-resolution scan of tyrannosaur skull ever done. The results add a new piece to the puzzle of how these bone-crushing top predators evolved over millions of years.

Celebrating the 100th birthday of the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum’s newly restored chuck wagon is part of the festivities for the second-annual Community Appreciation Day on Aug. 26.
Admission is free all day at the museum in Las Cruces and activities are planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are invited to interact with living history characters, shop at the plant sale, enjoy the food vendors, or check out the animals, exhibits or vintage tractors. Children’s games are part of the activities, as well as train rides (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for $3) and pony rides (10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. for $5).
Demonstrations on Aug. 26 include: blacksmithing, quilting, milking (10 a.m. and 3 p.m.), colcha embroidery (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.), and wool spinning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.).

Two divisions in the New Mexico Cultural Affairs Department have been awarded Creating Humanities Community Grants by the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH). The largest $150,000 matching grant funds a project at of one of New Mexico’s Historic Sites, “Taking Back History: The Enduring Legacy of Bosque Redondo.” The second grant of $30,000 under the NEH’s “The Power of Story in Communities” was awarded to Embudo Valley Library and Community Center.

With an established mission to Build a Better World more than 200 children from the Pueblos of Tesuque, Laguna, San Ildefonso, Zia, Jemez, Santa Clara, Ohkay Owingeh, and Santo Domingo designed and created miniature adobe structures that were assembled into a village complete with hornos and a ramada. Future architects Brandon Ortiz (Taos Pueblo), Charelle Brown (Santo Domingo Pueblo), and Daryl Lucero (Isleta Pueblo) created a fun and dynamic atmosphere in which children made adobe bricks, designed and built structures. Stories were shared and basic design ideas exchanged as students from ages 4 to 12 worked together to complete the village.

The National Science Foundation has awarded the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science a $101,125 grant to support research on early placental mammals and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) educational programs. The project, aims to shed light on how mammals fared after the Cretaceous extinction (K-Pg extinction), an event most famous for the demise of the non-avian dinosaurs.

On August 4, get ready for The Great American Eclipse at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) during $5 First Friday. On Monday, August 21, an eclipse of the sun can be seen across the entire United States. For most of the country, including New Mexico, the eclipse will be partial. This means only part of the sun’s surface will be blocked by the moon and there will be no point during which it will be safe to look at the sun without proper eye protection. The only place where it will be safe to view the sun directly will be a relatively narrow path from Oregon to South Carolina, and then only for a little over two minutes while the sun is totally eclipsed.
