The New Mexico Museum of Art has been selected to receive a gift of fifty works of art from New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel, with the help of the National Gallery of Art, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The gifts are part of a national gifts program entitled The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. It will distribute 2,500 works from the Vogels' collection of contemporary art throughout the nation, with fifty works going to a selected art institution in each of the fifty states. Artists whose work is being donated to the New Mexico Museum of Art include; Neil Jenny, Katherine Porter, Lucio Pozzi, and Richard Tuttle.

Native American Picture Books of Change—is an exhibition of original works by Hopi, Navajo, Apache, and Pueblo artists who illustrated children's books in the 1920's through today. Based on the book of the same title by Rebecca Benes, the exhibition focuses on illustrations in Native American children’s books of the last century. Emerging Indian artists illustrated the stories for Indian students based on Native oral traditions and narratives about everyday Indian life.

The reinstallation of the New Mexico Museum of Art collection in 2007 offered an opportunity to display the history of New Mexico art in a contemporary way. How the West Is One created a single chronology composed of Native American, Hispanic, and European American art. However, because this is a long term exhibition, the display could not include works on paper.
Paper Trail: How the West Is One, Too displays photographs, drawings, and prints to expand the original presentation. The exhibition opens on September 19, 2008 and runs through February 8, 2009.

Writing with Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities, features a rare collection of entire ensembles of women's, men's and children's ceremonial dress, baby carriers, quilt covers, festive and religious vestments, silver jewelry, embroidered silk valences, and wax-resist dyed curtains, plus a loom, weaving tools, and embroidery cases. More than 500 objects in Writing with Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities, represent 15 ethnic groups and nearly 100 subgroups in China.

More than 1,200 new donors—giving at various levels—have brought the New Mexico History Museum closer to its $6.5 million goal to build exhibitions at the new downtown museum, according to a report at the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s Aug. 7 Annual Meeting.
New Mexicans from throughout New Mexico joined the History Museum campaign this spring to raise another $425,000 to help meet the terms of a $750,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation. Thanks to their donations, only $323,000 remains to be raised to reach the Kresge challenge and complete the History Museum campaign.

Treasures of Devotion/Tesoros de Devoción contains bultos, retablos, and crucifijos, dating from the late 1700s to 1900. They demonstrate how European stylistic traditions and iconography were combined with new palettes, different styles, and distinctive regional decorative designs that transformed New Mexican santo making into a unique hybrid. Highlighting the exhibit will be esoteric pieces such as the Crucifixion in a Large Nicho by the Laguna Santero and La Santísima Trinidad, a wood retablo with an applied paper painting of the Holy Trinity. Treasures of Devotion/Tesoros de Devoción exhibition opened at the Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum on July 20, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. and will be a long-term exhibition.
