What: NHCC will be hosting ire’ne lara silva, an author and poet based in Austin, Texas, for a reception, book-reading and signing event on May 13. Then, join us at the Center on May 14 for a creative writing workshop led by silva – titled “Gritos: On Finding the Sources of Our Voices” – designed to help aspiring writers find their deepest personal voices.

Who: ire’ne lara silva is the author of four poetry collections, furia, Blood Sugar Canto, CUICACALLI/House of Song, and FirstPoems, two chapbooks, Enduring Azucares and Hibiscus Tacos, and a short story collection, flesh to bone, which won the Premio Aztlán Literary Prize.

She and poet Dan Vera are also the co-editors of Imaniman: Poets Writing in the Anzaldúan Borderlands, a collection of poetry and essays. She is currently a Writer at Large for Texas Highways Magazine and is working on a second collection of short stories titled the light of your body.

When: The event begins with a reception at 6 p.m. on May 13, followed by a reading at 7 p.m. and a book-signing at 8 p.m. The May 14 workshop will run from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm on May 14.

Where: The reception will take place in the lobby of the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts at NHCC, with the reading and book-signing taking place in NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre. The Gritos workshop will take place in the Domenici Education Building.

Why: The Escribir | Escuchar: Hispanic & Latine Writer Series highlights Hispanic and Latine authors and poets with a variety of backgrounds, perspectives and styles. The series is generously supported by AARP.
