Historic Film: Hungarian Festival Dress
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Screening begins at 2 pm

A Friends of Folk Art Pop-Up Film Event  in the Joan and Clifford Vernick Auditorium. Historic Film: Hungarian Festival Dress

In 1938, Clara Hoover of Oak Park, Illinois, traveled to Hungary as well as what was then Czechoslovakia to participate in an immersive workshop program organized by the International School of Art (ISA).  Traveling from a Budapest base to explore Hungarian towns and villages, Miss Hoover documented on 16mm film the games, dances, crafts, and ceremonies she encountered, demonstrating particular interest in traditional costumes and their many regional variations.  Clara Hoover later recorded a narration to accompany her film and donated the original picture and sound materials to the Museum of International Folk Art in 1983. Film in English.

Bartlett Librarian & Archivist Brian Graney will provide an introduction to the screening of this historic folk art film.

PUBLIC WELCOME, FREE WITH MUSEUM ADMISSION. Brought to you by the Friends of Folk Art

"Heading into the Wind: A Memoir"
New Mexico History Museum
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Please join Jack Loeffler for a book presentation and signing for his new autobiography.

With the temperament of Santa Claus and the tenacity of a badger, Jack Loeffler reveals his compassion and concern for Southwestern traditional cultures and their respective habitats in the wake of Manifest Destiny. Working both as an individual and with comrades--including Edward Abbey and Gary Snyder--he was part of an early coterie of counterculturalists and environmentalists who fought to thwart the plunder of natural resources in the Southwest. Loeffler, a former jazz musician, fire lookout, museum curator, bioregionalist, and self-taught aural historian, shares his humor and imagination, his adventures, observations, reflections, and meditations along the trail in his retelling of a life well lived. In this honest memoir, he advises each and every one of us to go skinny-dipping joyfully in the flow of Nature to better understand where we’re headed.

Curators Examine Your Treasures

MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom, something special from your collection, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally, curators prefer to examine items from the Southwest, but they will look at anything you bring in for review.

Federal law prohibits curators from "appraising" any items, but they will direct you to appropriate resources.

Native Pottery Demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Helen Bird, Santo Domingo Pueblo

Helen D. Bird is a self-taught master potter who learned about traditional pottery making by watching her great-aunt, whom she only knew as Sah’NaYa. Bird started experimenting with pottery making in 1984. Today, her work is sought by collectors and is housed in museums and local collections. Helen has also continued making utilitarian pottery as well as ceremonial pieces.

Bird was commissioned to create a Native American designed Starbucks travel mug which has been sold world-wide. Although Bird focuses on traditional Pueblo polychrome and micaceous pottery, she has recently added a contemporary flair to her traditional designs.

Bird takes pride in gathering and processing all natural, local materials including the clays, temper and paints. Her pots are traditionally fired at her family home. All processes are being passed down to her children and grandchildren.
