The Wisdom Archive: Preserving and Celebrating the Traditions of New Mexico

Please join Scott Andrews, Founder of The Wisdom Archive as he shares his video portrait of the work of Northern New Mexican Elders, as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series.

Since 2014, The Wisdom Archive has been producing video portraits of masters of traditional culture for a YouTube archive. Primarily focusing on the work of Northern New Mexican elders, the Archive now includes 51 short films. Ranging from the traditional music of Antonia Apodaca and Cipriano Vigil, to “year in the life” depictions of long-time sheepherders and farmers, portraits of traditional artists at work, and ancient recipes brought to life, the Archive’s intent is to celebrate and preserve disappearing traditional culture.

Student Art Exhibition | Exposición de Arte Estudiantil
Museum of International Folk Art
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

As part of our School Partnership with El Camino Real Academy School, students’ artworks are featured as a collaborative exhibition. For the past month, students learned about folk art traditions found in the Alexander Girard Wing. Some students had the opportunity to meet contemporary santero Arthur Lopez to learn about his artistic practice and iconography. In response to learning about diverse folk art traditions students explored themes of community, storytelling, and symbolic imagery in their artwork.

We encourage you to come see our young artists’ artwork at the museum. The exhibition will be on view from March 10th through 27th in the Museums Atrium

Exhibition Opening: Free Admission 5-7pm
New Mexico History Museum
10:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs

Please join us for our exhibition opening of Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs.

Admission is free today from 5pm-7pm, and Lite Refreshments will be served from 5pm-6pm.

This exhibition explores well-known resorts as well as lesser-known hot springs. Ponce de Leon, Montezuma, and Faywood are a few among many areas whose history will be addressed. The nearly 90 photographs range from the late 19th century through the 1980s and document the evolution of how many of these springs were used and developed. Museum visitors will also see the stark change in how people dressed (or not) when they visited and enjoyed these hot springs. New Mexico attracted many people seeking respite from tuberculosis and other ailments, and they typically frequented hot springs to aid in this relief. Exhibit opening is admission free. The exhibition runs March 18 - September 4, 2022.
