Crosses of Iron: The Tragic Story of Dawson, New Mexico, and Its Twin Mining Disasters

Please join Nick Pappas, for an ON-LINE historic talk related to the tragic mining events in Dawson, New Mexico, as part of our Friends of History lecture series.

In October 1913, 261 miners and two rescuers died when a massive explosion ripped through a mine operated by Phelps, Dodge & Company in Dawson, New Mexico. Ten years later, a second blast claimed the lives of another 120 miners. Today, all that remains is a cemetery marked by a sea of white iron crosses memorializing the nearly four hundred miners killed in the two explosions — and a vibrant community that still gathers by the hundreds every other Labor Day weekend for a picnic reunion on the old townsite, long after the town was no more. Nick Pappas will present the history of these events, of the rise and decline of the mining town of Dawson, and of the strong bond of former residents and families of Dawson that remains to this day.

Nick Pappas worked for four decades in the newspaper industry, most recently as an editor at the Albuquerque Journal. He has written news stories, columns and award-winning editorials, as well as freelance articles for magazines. Prior to the Albuquerque Journal, Nick spent nearly 24 years at The Telegraph of Nashua, New Hampshire, where he served at different times as business editor, city editor, managing editor, editor-in-chief and editorial page editor. He was named an editorial writer of the year by the New England Newspaper and Press Association in 2009 and 2011, and he was recognized by the New Hampshire Press Association with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. A native of Lowell, Massachusetts, Nick now lives with his wife, Susan, in Albuquerque.

Friends of Folk Art present Rapa Nui – an In-Depth Tour of Easter Island with Ken Collins.
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

FOFA, Lecture, members only

Please join us on Sunday, February 11, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to explore the mysteries and theories surrounding the ruins left behind by ancestors of the Rapa Nuians. Ken Collins will focus on a visit he made to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in 2019. This involved a detailed exploration of sites on the island led by a local couple. The husband being Rapa Nuian and the wife, an American ex-pat whose grandfather was perhaps the most famous non-native archeologist to explore the ruins left behind by ancestors of the present-day native people. There are many theories about why the sites were abandoned, but increasingly, a clearer picture is coming into focus. The presentation will include natural features, the moai (statues) at various sites and the fascinating quarry where the stone was excavated and carved.

This event is for FOFA members ONLY.  FOFA members will receive an invitation by email which will include all the details. A single membership allows access to one ticket. A dual membership allows for two tickets.
