Fiesta dresses have been worn in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest since the early 20th century. These outfits, also known as patio dresses, were worn during celebrations commemorating community founding, parish feast days, or other significant events. In honor of the 311th Santa Fe Fiestas, enjoy a delightful display of colorful Fiesta dresses here at the museum.

On September 2, Brandon Dickson will deliver the fourth lecture in our series on Lincoln history! Dickson’s lecture “The Three Escapes of Billy the Kid,” delivered in three sections, will deep dive on the granular details of Billy the Kid’s adventures. He will examine the Tunstall Store and murder of Sheriff Brady, the McSween house fire and the 5-Day Battle, and Billy’s escape from Lincoln’s jail and the killing of Bob Olinger and J.W. Bell. Come and learn about the exciting history of Lincoln.

As a musician, he has over twenty-five years of experience playing drums and percussion as a live performer and a composer. He works an arts educator in New Mexico public schools and maintains connection to his community through storytelling. This Storytelling series is generously funded by The Family of Marie & Tony Hillerman.

The First Atomic Bomb Test: The Trinity Test in New Mexico
Please join Janet Farrell Brodie, Professor Emerita of US History at Claremont Graduate University, for an ONLINE talk as she explores the history of the Trinity test and its complicated aftermath, as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series.
On July 16, 1945, just weeks before the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, that brought about the end of World War II, the United States detonated the world’s first atomic bomb at the Trinity testing site located in the remote Tularosa Basin in south-central New Mexico. Janet Farrell Brodie explores the history of the Trinity test and its complicated aftermath. She will share some of her research into the everyday experiences of the little-known people who contributed to the test’s success — the men who built and worked at the site, along with the ranchers whose land became the test site — as well as the downwinders who suffered the consequences of the radiation. Her study concentrates on these ordinary people who lived in the region and participated in the testing.
Janet Farrell Brodie is a professor emerita of US History at Claremont Graduate University (California), recently retired after 25 years. She is the author of The First Atomic Bomb: The Trinity Site in New Mexico. Her focus has been on researching, writing, and teaching about secrecy and American wars. She has published articles on atomic secrecy in multiple venues, including the Journal of Social History and the Journal of Diplomatic History and in the edited volume, Inevitably Toxic: Historical Perspectives on Contamination, Exposure, and Expertise.

Flea Fall Donation Days for Friends of Folk Art

FOFA is seeking folk art donations of gently used textiles, clothing, ceramics, masks, wood carvings, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and décor items to be sold at the 2024 Folk Art Flea. If you have folk, tribal, fine art, decorative art, clothing with an ethnic or folk art look, or art books that you are ready to recycle to other art lovers then please join us for our fall donation days.
Each year patrons, collectors and folk art lovers donate a variety of folk art items to be sold at the annual Folk Art Flea, organized by the Friends of Folk Art, to raise funds for the educational and exhibition programs of the Museum of International Folk Art.
Anyone can donate! If you have friends who are Spring cleaning, downsizing, or holding an estate sale, please let them know about this special opportunity to make a difference at one of Santa Fe’s most celebrated institutions by recycling their art items to the Flea.

Friends of Folk Art trip to Las Vegas, NM

Unique trip to as Vegas, NM
The Friends of Folk Art are sponsoring a unique two-day trip to historic Las Vegas, NM beginning on Wednesday, September 13, with a short stop at San Miguel del Vado to see their historic plaza, and then onto the historic Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Villanueva to view the restored narrative embroideries inside.
Lunch following the Villanueva stop will be in Las Vegas at the Plaza Hotel, called the Belle of the Southwest. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a guided tour of Las Vegas’ historic Rail district, the Harvey girl dormitory, and a sampling of the 900+ historic buildings in town.
Dinner will be at the Castañeda Hotel, a historic Harvey House in Las Vegas, where a block of rooms has been reserved at the hotel for the night.
Thursday’s itinerary offers a visit to the campus of United World College, to tour two significant buildings: Montezuma Castle, a 90,000 square-foot Queen Anne-style hotel and the Dwan Light Sanctuary, a quiet space with prisms instead of windows. The tour will conclude there but we will have plenty of time for shopping, lunch, etc., before heading home.
This event is for FOFA members ONLY. FOFA members will receive an invitation by email which will include more details and the price. A single membership allows access to one ticket. A dual membership allows for two tickets, but each member must register separately.

Fort Stanton sits on 240 picturesque acres. Built in 1855, the site has changed a lot over time, leaving plenty of opportunities for stunning photography. On the tour, guests will be allowed to photograph off-limits areas, which include the back of the hospital and the neighboring building, #4. Free roam these spaces and capture the aging beauty of the site. This tour is limited to 12 people, and will be held Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Ticket cost is $20, non-refundable, and includes access to the other buildings on the site, open to the public.

A documentary about secret code shared among lesbian youth in 1970s/80s Albuquerque, New Mexico: They didn’t all know each other, but they knew how to find one another.
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and explore an overlooked slice of New Mexico’s LGBTQIA+ history by attending “The Whistle: Screening and Filmmaker Discussion” at the New Mexico History Museum.
“The Whistle” tells the story of a secret code created by and shared among young lesbians in 1970s & 80s Albuquerque as a means of self-identification and finding community. The special whistle was hard to learn and easy to overlook–a lifeline to safe belonging. The documentary looks for the whistle’s origins and explores how the young people who used it navigated the humor and heartbreak of growing up queer and Chicanx in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The event includes a showing of the documentary and a discussion with the filmmaker StormMiguel Florez, a queer Latinx trans man who was a member of the community after coming out in 1987 at Albuquerque’s Del Norte High School.

A History of Enslaved and Free Black Cowboys in the Southwest

Ronald W. Davis, II, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Austin and curator of American history at San Antonio’s Witte Museum, will present an illustrated lecture on the history of Black cowboys in the Southwest, particularly Texas, before the Civil War and in the period after Reconstruction.
Davis will discuss the lived experience of Black cowboys, particularly how they navigated discrimination and racism in ranch life and during cattle drives, situations in which racial segregation was difficult to implement.

During Let’s Take a Look, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology wait in the lobby to look at your treasures. They will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. While our curators prefer to work with objects from the Southwest, they are willing to take a look at anything you might bring in. If they cannot identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can! Sometimes, the lively discussion among curators may provide as much insight as an accurate object identification itself.
The event is always free and open to the public, but please note Federal and State regulations prohibit the monetary appraisal of objects.

Join the Friends of Folk Art to hear the personal stories of Roxanne Swentzell. Roxanne will take us through her gallery and explain the symbolism and meanings of her work. She will also talk about the installation of her work at the Poeh Cultural Center. Roxanne focuses a lot on interpretative female portraits attempting to bring back the balance of power between the male and female, inherently recognized in her own culture. Additionally, she increasingly uses a powerful sense of humor to communicate. Her figures represent a full range of emotions and irrepressible moods. Though steeped in her own culture, Roxanne’s work demonstrates an astounding universality, speaking to people of all cultures.
