Wari Tie Dye Tunic Panel, South Coast of Peru, AD 600-900. Camelid fiber Museum of International Folk Art, Gift of Lloyd Cotsen and the Neutrogena Corporation, A.1995.93.1271. The Wari Empire spread out across the Central Andes from its capital in modern-day Ayacucho, Peru from around AD 500-1100. With renewed archaeological excavations at Wari sites has come a surge of pride in Wari heritage among Ayacucho artisans. Weavers in particular are studying ancient techniques and designs to incorporate into their work.
