Carpodacus pinicola, mixed media.

Identified in an 1880s bird book by Ernest Thompson Seton as Carpodacus pinicola, the bird in this painting is likely a finch or grosbeak now known by a different name.  Photo courtesy of the Academy for the Love of Learning.

The method of bird identification developed by Seton would be used later in field guides by Roger Tory Peterson and others.
