Albuquerque, NM- For the 35th annual National Hispanic Heritage Month, the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is pulling out all the stops to bring a full month of special Hispanic and Latine performances, events, and presentations!

“Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latine individuals in artistic and cultural fields, and we plan to do exactly that at the National Hispanic Cultural Center,” said NHCC Executive Director Dr. Margie Huerta. “Join us for a month of unique activities, presentations, and signature events at the Center beginning in mid-September!”

National Hispanic Heritage Month began in its current form in 1988, when it was expanded from a single week. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores in September 1810, which marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence. The month traditionally runs through Oct. 15.

The slate of activities kicks off in September with events ranging from a ten-day run of Luis Santiero’s play Our Lady of the Tortilla in early September in partnership with the Sandia Performing Arts Company, to a free screening of the film Bless Me, Ultima – adapted from the eponymous novel by acclaimed Chicano author and New Mexican Rudolfo Anaya – on Friday, Sept. 30.

Then, in October, head to the Center for events like the Rudolfo & Patricia Anaya Lecture Series, featuring poet and author Erika Sanchez, on Thursday, Oct. 6, and a catalog release party for the NHCC’s unique exhibition Fronteras del Futuro: Art in New Mexico and Beyond on Saturday, Oct. 15, where visitors can mingle with featured artists and enjoy the artwork on display.

The slate of activities at the Center even extends into the second half of the month, with our inaugural Noche de Familia on Friday, Oct. 21, featuring trick-or-treating, a free screening of Coco, and more!

Hispanic Heritage Month at the NHCC concludes with a celebration of documentarian Hector Galán, the first documentary filmmaker inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Head to the NHCC Albuquerque Journal Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 27 for a director’s talk and screening of The End of The Race, Galán’s iconic 1981 documentary focusing on four Pueblo cross-country runners in New Mexico, and their fight to keep their culture alive.

Events will take place at various locations around the Center, located at 1701 4th St. SW, and prices for the events will vary. For a full list of events associated with Hispanic Heritage Month, visit https://www.nhccnm.org/events/.
