Sunday, April 14

Grand opening

From 1—4 PM, bring the family as museum-trained guides show off all of the exhibit’s hands-on items and activities, including a touchable chuck wagon, a roping station, and a chance to try on cowboy clothes. Santa Fe hatmaker J.D. Noble demonstrates techniques for shaping a proper cowboy hat. Practice designing one of your own on paper.

At 2 pm, B. Byron Price, director of the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West at the University of Oklahoma and director of the University of Oklahoma Press speaks on “The Making of a Cowboy Hero" in the History Museum Auditorium. Price’s lecture focuses on the way Theodore Roosevelt, Owen Wister, Frederic Remington, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and Charles Russell took one of the lowest-paid workers in the West, dusted him off and transformed him into a figure who carried a nation’s values, morals and courage.

From 3—5 PM, enjoy refreshments courtesy of the Women's Board of the Museum of New Mexico and live music by Bill Hearne in the first-floor lobby.

The day is free with admission (Sundays free to NM residents).
