(Santa Fe, New Mexico,) – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Museums & Historic Sites Guide for 2019 Winter/2020 Spring is now available online for free at http://nmculture.org/guide

This guide’s haunting cover image shows a woman in period costume twirling on a wintery parade ground near a cannon at Fort Selden Historic Site. Entitled, “Tiffanie Twirling,” the subject of the photo, Historic Site Instructional Coordinator Tiffanie Owens says, “The clouds were low, the air was still. Larry was splitting wood for the fire. John kept the coffee hot while making biscuits beans and bacon in his crusty cast-iron skillet. And then it began to snow. I could not resist the urge to move to the parade ground and twirl.”

Diversity in New Mexico, in our geology, landscapes, people, weather, culture and traditions is the theme of the 2019 Winter/2020 Spring.

Among the featured articles is Home on the Range: From Ranches to Rockets a new exhibit at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. This exhibit delves into the dramatic transformation of life in the Tularosa Basin in the 1940s and beyond.

Throughout all of 2020, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture hosts Diego Romero versus the End of Art - a dynamic exploration of a Cochiti Pueblo artist’s journey through life as depicted through his work.

The New Mexico Museum of Art exhibition Agnes Pelton: Desert Transandentalist examines the work of this unheralded contemporary of Georgia O’Keeffe. Pelton’s desert landscapes come alive with color. And, in January, the Museum of Art hosts The Birth, death and resurrection of Christ: From Michaelangelo to Tiepolo.

The New Mexico History Museum looks at a transformative industry, and the men and women who changed America and opened New Mexico’s treasures to the rest of the country: Working on the Railroad.

Prepare for a spine-tingling experience in a haunted house featuring ghostly storytelling provided by Yokai: Ghosts and Demons of Japan at the Museum of International Folk Art.

The science of archaeology and studying New Mexico’s fascinating 12,000-year cultural heritage is part of the mission of the Center for New Mexico Archaeology.  The Women in Archaeology exhibit at CNMA recognizes the female pioneers in this male-dominated field.

A new exhibit on display at Jemez Historic Site won the Archaeology Heritage Preservation Award this past May. This edition of the Winter Guide examines that award-winning exhibit and explores the extraordinary life of J. Paul Taylor.

The events calendar of the Museums & Historic Sites Guide has an extensive list of activities happening between through May 2020.
