New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science

January 21, 2022

Albuquerque, NM – The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is proud to announce the opening of Dogs! A Science Tail, an ambitious, multi-media, hands-on science exhibition that highlights the dynamic nature of the bond between humans and dogs, and invites guests to experience the extraordinary way that dogs see, hear, and smell the world. The exhibition will demonstrate how the ability to understand and communicate with each other lies at the heart of the unique relationship between humans and dogs, and what makes this one of the most successful interspecies partnerships of all time.

The exhibition opens February 5 and runs through May 1, 2022. Presented by Bank of Albuquerque.

Sniff out the science behind our puppy love! Let curiosity be your guide and discover life from a dog’s point of view in Dogs! A Science Tail, a richly interactive 9,000 sq. ft. exhibition for humans. Experience the extraordinary way a dog sees, hears, and smells the world through fun and unique hands-on exhibits and uncover the science of our enduring bond.

From lovable companions to loyal protectors, dogs have evolved over thousands of years from ancient wolves into the cuddly canines that live and work alongside us today. They can rescue us from peril, provide help to people in need, or offer a furry shoulder to lean on. Dig deeper into these incredible animals and how they communicate with each other – and with us!

Explore how science is helping us better understand our tail-wagging companions and what makes our relationship one of the most successful interspecies partnerships of all time. Train a virtual dog to heed your commands, clock your running speed against the world’s fastest dogs, and unearth replica fossils of wolves and dogs to reveal their surprising similarities. Guests will also enjoy walking an invisible dog through a neighborhood maze, playing a special game of “pup culture” Jeopardy, and exploring the various careers that involve these intelligent animals. Be sure to record your own story of a special dog and proudly share your puppy pictures in the exhibition photo gallery.

Don’t miss this chance to discover how dogs have nuzzled their way into human society and into our hearts to become our loyal sidekicks and life-saving heroes. You will never look at dogs the same way again! Given the surge in pet adoptions throughout COVID and to honor our connection to our new and existing canine friends, the Museum offers free admission to Dogs! A Science Tail as part of the regular admission ticket as a special gift to our visitors.

Dogs! A Science Tail is created and developed by the California Science Center with support from Annenberg Foundation and Wallis Annenberg PetSpace. PetSmart Charities®, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, is sponsoring the national tour.  The exhibition is presented in Albuquerque by Bank of Albuquerque.

To accompany the exhibit, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science will feature the highly-anticipated documentary film Superpower Dogs, narrated by Chris Evans, taking audiences on an immersive adventure to experience the life-saving superpowers and extraordinary bravery of some of the world’s most amazing dogs. Superpower Dogs in IMAX® 3D will open at the Verus Research Dyna Theater on February 5th to coincide with the opening of the exhibit.

While pets are not permitted inside the museum, advance sales tickets for their human companions are on sale now. As a “thank you” to our resilient visitors, admission to Dogs! A Science Tail will be included in general admission tickets, which range from $5 to $8. Discounted combo tickets for the exhibition and Superpower Dogs are available. Additional discounts are available for Museum Members, students, seniors and children. For tickets or further information, visit
