Ernest Thompson Seton spent much of his life working to connect people -- and especially young people -- with nature. As part of its Wild at Heart: Ernest Thompson Seton exhibit, the New Mexico History is partnering with the Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary to do just that.

On Saturday, March 26, “Birds of a Feather Explore Together” offers individuals and families a free, daylong exploration of Seton himself and the wild birds he documented, along with hands-on activities, games and bird-watching with Audubon experts.

Begin your day at 10 am in the museum’s classroom to examine feathers, eggs, nests and other bird items. While there, visit Wild at Heart: Ernest Thompson Seton, an exploration of the one-time wolf killer who became a leading conservationist, artist and author. After lunch on your own, meet at the Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary on Upper Canyon Road from 1:30-3:30 pm for games and birding activities with staff educators.

The event is free, but registration is required. Call Dana Vackar Strang at 505-983-4609 or send an e-mail to dstrang@audubon.org. For more information about the event, log onto http://nm.audubon.edu.

Hired in 1893 to kill marauding wolves in Clayton, NM, Seton came to see the animals as part of a cohesive ecosystem worthy of protection. Through “The King of Currumpaw, A Wolf Story,” written for Scribner’s Magazine in 1894, he invented the genre of the realistic animal story and embarked on a career that today draws comparisons to luminaries like John James Audubon. Seton strongly believed in connecting youths with nature. In 1910, he co-founded the Boy Scouts of America.

Wild at Heart: Ernest Thompson Seton is presented with special support from the Academy for the Love of Learning, home of the Seton Legacy Project in Santa Fe. Funding for the exhibit was made possible by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs; Academy for the Love of Learning; National Park Service/Save Our Treasures Grant Program; Museum of New Mexico Foundation; New Mexico History Museum Opening Gala Committee; Phyllis and Edward Gladden Endowment Fund; Herzstein Family Endowment Fund; and the Palace Guard.
