Santa Fe, NM - New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary will open to the public in Santa Fe on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023. Located in Santa Fe’s Railyard District, this highly-anticipated venue will create a new space for contemporary art in New Mexico. More details about opening events will be released soon.

New Mexico Museum of Art (NMMOA) Vladem Contemporary will showcase contemporary art to broaden the diversity and reach of the museum’s collection. It will create opportunities for the museum to engage living artists from New Mexico and artists from different cultural backgrounds, and to bring world-class exhibitions to New Mexico that showcase diverse perspectives. The new building will allow the museum to pursue its educational mission with modern exhibition spaces suited for contemporary art, a dedicated artist-in-residence studio, expanded collection storage, and a remarkable collection viewing area.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors when the building opens to the public this fall,” said Mark White, executive director of NMMOA. “NMMOA Vladem Contemporary will serve as a major attraction for the nearly 2 million annual visitors to Santa Fe, and for local families and schools looking for robust and engaging educational experiences that address the needs and expectations of contemporary audiences.”

A major highlight of NMMOA Vladem Contemporary is its dynamic educational classroom, where artmaking, classes, hands-on activities, and performance-based art will occur. The building was designed with substantial new storage facilities that are currently lacking at the original NMMOA Plaza Building. With state-of-the-art climate control and abundant storage, the new building will allow the museum to increase its capacity to accept donations of major contemporary works of art, helping to keep these important works in the state.

By June 30, the building will be handed over from Bradbury Stamm Construction to the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. Before its opening on September 23, all major mechanical systems at Vladem Contemporary will be run to ensure optimal function. This will happen prior to the installation of its inaugural exhibition, Shadow and Light, and the transfer of collections from the NMMOA Plaza Building.
