New Native Photography, 2011, opens Friday, August 12, 6 p.m. at the New Mexico Museum of Art in collaboration with the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA). The exhibition of contemporary Native photography is in conjunction with the 90Th Santa Fe Indian Market.

New Native Photography will feature more than fifteen Native photographers representing various United States federally recognized tribes, pueblos, and First Nations tribes. Distinguished artists and educators Larry McNeil and Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie, along with the museum’s curator of photography, Katherine Ware, selected the works. Photographs from more than thirty applicants were evaluated on the basis of vision, technical execution, and cohesiveness as a body of images, with consideration given to images offering a fresh expression of Native experience.

“The exhibition offers just a small taste of the tremendous breadth of imagination and skill characteristic of Native artists working in photography today,” Katherine Ware says. “It is a great pleasure to see recent work by established figures as well as newcomers, and we are excited about showing these photographs to our wide range of visitors during the busy summer season in Santa Fe.”

The diversity of work speaks to the richness of Native experience, with photographs ranging from portraiture and landscape to staged, constructed, and mixed media.
