New World: Timeless Visions

New Mexico Museum of Art to host biennial membership exhibition of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC)

September 7-23, 2012

(Santa Fe, NM)—The New Mexico Museum of Art will host New World: Timeless Visions, the biennial membership exhibition of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). The exhibition coincides with the IAC’s biennial General Assembly, which is being held this year in Santa Fe. The exhibition will be on view September 7-23, 2012. There will be no public reception.

The exhibition New World: Timeless Visions includes the work of more than 140 IAC members. The exhibition will provide visitors with a glimpse of some of the innovative and exciting contemporary ceramics being created around the globe. IAC members in the exhibition represent 35 different countries from all continents except Antarctica.

“We are pleased to host an exhibition of such a prestigious international ceramics organization,” said New Mexico Museum of Art Director Mary Kershaw. “New Mexico has a rich history of ceramics, including Native American traditions, so it is wonderful to welcome IAC to Santa Fe and to exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Art. We expect that the conference and the show will contribute greatly to the dialogue among the practitioners, curators, and critics of this ancient yet growing field in the arts.”

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF CERAMICS (IAC) and THE 2012 GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) represents the interests of ceramists worldwide. Its membership consists primarily of individual makers, supported by writers and critics, private collectors, museum and gallery curators, educational institutions and ceramic centers. The aims of the Academy are to present international contemporary ceramics at the highest level, to encourage cultural cooperation through ceramics around the world, and to facilitate communication between ceramists and museum curators, private galleries and collectors, art schools and other professional institutions. Membership in IAC is by nomination; elected candidates are accepted every two years.

The IAC’s 2012 General Assembly will take place September 17-21 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over the course of the 5-day conference, there will be lectures, panels, and various exhibitions throughout Santa Fe, including the membership show at the New Mexico Museum of Art. For information on IAC, please visit www.aic-iac.org. For full schedule and information on the 2012 General Assembly, please visit http://aaiceramics.org/iac2012/registration/. The New Mexico Museum of Art was founded in 1917 as the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico. Housed in a spectacular Pueblo Revival building designed by I. H. and William M. Rapp, it was based on their New Mexico building at the Panama-California Exposition (1915). The museum's architecture inaugurated what has come to be known as "Santa Fe Style." For nearly 100 years, the Museum has celebrated the diversity of the visual arts and the legacy of New Mexico as a cultural crossroads by collecting and exhibiting work by leading artists from New Mexico and elsewhere. This tradition continues today with a wide array of exhibitions with work from the world’s leading artists. The New Mexico Museum of Art brings the art of New Mexico to the world and the art of the world to New Mexico.

The New Mexico Museum of Art is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
